Only the Elements icon shows on the screen

When I go into a file to look at a bunch of photos, they appear as Elements icon plus text.  I can't get the photos to display unless I click on one and prepare to work on it in Elements.  How do I make the photos appear?  They used to in old versions of Elements.  Now that I've upgraded to the newest version, the ability to do this seems to have disappeared.  Help.
