What is a full (or incremental) backup created from the organizer?
It's a special folder containing renamed copies of all your media files and copies of all the components of the catalog folder. Generally, you store that backup folder on an external drive.
Can the organizer create that backup folder directly on the Cloud? No.
Can you use OneDrive or similar (Dropbox, Google Drive...) for that purpose?
Those services offer Cloud space AND automatic syncing from special folders on your computer to the space of the Cloud. You always have your originals in your computer with an updated copy on the Cloud.
So, if you decide to store your media files in those special folders on your computer as well as the catalog folder, they are automatically updated on the copies of the Cloud. You can restore them on your computer or on another one in case of loss of your computer. So, yes, you can use OneDrive as an alternative way to do a backup instead of the Organizer one.
You have to keep in mind that only the backups created by the organizer are able to restore the media files on another drive than the original one while updating the links in the catalog to the new location. That's especially important when you are moving to a new computer. Other backup solutions would show all files as disconnected and would require a full reconnection of the files, and that's not a pleasure!
So, to keep it simple, if you are happy with the choice of OneDrive:
- You store the media files tree within the OneDrive special folder
- You store a copy of your catalog folder within that OneDrive folder (I would not trust storing the original catalog folder)
- You also create normal full backups periodicaly and when you want to move to a new computer
- You forget about incremental backups.
- If you have plenty of free space in OneDrive and in your computer, theoretically you could create the organizer backup folder directly within the OneDrive special folder instead of an external drive, but remember that the organizer backup takes the same diskspace as the originals...
