Replacing text on a document

Unfortunately, I don't have photoshop any more. However, I need to make some alterations to text document. What I used to do was print the document and then scan it and then I could make adjustments to text by dropping in a new layer over the text and masking the text and putting my own text in. Is this possible with photoshop elements?
