I would like to create that heart shaped overly effect that is featured in the guided tutorial in Photoshop Elements 15 but all I get is a short video showing this feature but the step by step tutorial is missing. Can anyone direct me as to how I can accomplish this in PE15 ? Basically, I would like to place a heart shaped overlay on a color image and keep everything within the heart in color and everything outside of the heart black and white. Hopefully someone can explain why this tutorial is not available.

Hello,

Shape Overlay guided edit is available in PSE 2018 and beyond versions. You can either download the free 30-day trial, or you can follow the steps mentioned by 99jon to achieve a similar output in PSE 15.

Thanks,

  1. Open your image file, and convert it to black/white
  2. Set your foreground color chip to suit (I used red for demonstration)
  3. Activate the custom shape tool. The default shape library has a heart shape. Drag out the heart.
  4. Activate the move tool and position the heart where you want it to be.

Open your image

Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer

Select heart shape and drag over subject

Drag layer 1 above the heart shape layer

With layer 1 highlighted from the menu choose Layer >> Create Clipping Mask

Click off the eyeball on the background layer to reveal the masking

Now select the background layer and click the eyeball again
