Smart Brush & the "No pixels are more than 50% selected" message

Just looking for verification. I was using the Smart Brush and needed to try it several times to get the precise area I wanted. Sometimes I would get the "no more than 50%" error, until I undid several steps. I was on the correct (only) layer, and had 0 px feathering selected, so I couldn't figure out why I was getting the message. Then I noticed that I had Subtract From Selection selected (I had used that in a couple of iterations). When I changed it to Add To and clicked Smart Brush in the same area of the photo again, the message was gone and a selection was made. That makes sense to me, but I'm not 100% sure if that was the cause of the problem, so can someone verify that? Thanks.
