type tool showing horizontal lines instead of text

Please help! I am trying to place type on to an image. I click on the type tool, then horizontal type tool. When I click on the image and type, all I get is a white horizontal line. What can I be doing wrong please?!

Hi Donna,

Please specify the device and version of the OS you are using.

Also, please save your work and then try to uninstall the application, reboot your device and reinstall it.
