I just installed Photoshop CC.
When I run PS and try use some of the features (i.e. Oil Paint, 3D), I get the following error message:
"Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled enhancements for this feature which use the graphics hardware. The issue can be commonly fixed by updating the display drivers. If the problem persists, disable OpenCL for this and other features in Preferences > Performance > Advanced Settings."
I have the following driver - AMD Radeon (TM) R7 240 - And it is up to date.
I have gone into Preferences > Performance > Advanced Settings, and the OpenCL setting is unchecked and greyed out so it cannot be selected.
I have checked that my document is RGB, that I am running Windows 64-Bit, and that 'Use graphics processor' is checked in my settings.
Please help! I have no idea what to try next.
Thanks so much.

Hi Meg
I would start with the graphics driver.
The latest version 17.7.2 is available from the AMD website (don't rely on Windows to tell you the latest version). Download and install that then try Photoshop again

Ha, right, ok. (I did go on Windows saying it was up to date...) Doing so now! Thanks for the tip, I will report back and let you know if that works.

Dave,
It's still not working, even with the updated driver. The OpenCL option is still greyed out and unchecked in preferences, also, in case that is a useful piece of info.

Hi
Looking closely at your system data, and comparing it to mine - is there any chance that you have more than one graphics processor on board (either two cards or one on the motherboard)?
Although the system info shows 1 GL and 1 CL GPU - the reported available memory for each is different (1024 for GL and 2559 for CL). There is also line there which says clgpu[0].IsIntegratedCLGPU=1.
On my system I only have a single AMD card and that line is set to 0 and the reported memory is the same for both GL and CL.

Hi Dave,
In all honesty, I have no idea and no idea how to check. This is my computer:
https://www.asus.com/Tower-PCs/K30BF/
Graphics: AMD® Radeon R7 240 2GB
CPU: AMD A10-7800 3.5GHZ/2M
I haven't modified anything. I'm sorry, I really don't have a clue about this kind of thing. 😞

Hi
Type Device Manager into the Windows search box then click on Device Manager.
Click on the arrow next to Display adapters to expand it then take a screenshot of the Device Manager dialogue (you can use the windows snipping tool to do that).
Please paste it here - it should look something like this (I added the red ovals):

Thank you, Dave 🙂
EDIT: I have contacted Asus and they have said "it is AMD® Radeon R7 240 it is integrated".

Hi
I am puzzled - I was thinking we would see two adapters in their so we could disable one.
By including their names hopefully one of these guys will be able to give some pointers of where to go next.
To sum up you have Windows 10 and CC2017. You can't get 3D to work and Open CL is greyed. You do have advanced checked in GPU performance.
The system info shows a different memory available to GL and CL but you have confirmed you have only one adapter and you have installed the latest update from the AMD website.
Whilst we wait for their input you could take a look at this:

The only suggestion I could offer is to try some of the older AMD drivers if you can download then from AMD site.

Thank you, I did previously have an older driver, but that didn't work either.

Hi Dave,
Yes that's all correct.
I've been through every step on the troubleshooting link you sent me and still it's not working.
The only thing I couldn't do was to access the AMD control centre and switch the power saving mode to High Performance instead of Power Saving - there was no option on my control centre to go into advanced settings to do this.
Thank you - I really hope there's a solution, otherwise Photoshop/my PC are rendered useless. 😞

Could it be an issue that my graphics card doesn't support OpenCL? (I have no idea what OpenCL is but it seems to be important).
I found this thread where a user with the same graphics card is reporting that it doesn't seem to be compatable with OpenCL:
OpenCL2.0 not available on Radeon R7 240 | Community
I've been on the AMD website and searched for OpenCL drivers. The links are broken to the .exe downloads so I can't download an OpenCL driver:
If this is the case, and my graphics card isn't corrrect, even though it says it's supported and that, officially, it is Open GL compatable, what are my options? Do I have to get another graphics card? (And then will that create a conflict? I don't know whether my graphics card is embedded in the motherboard or a separate addition...)
Thank you so much for your expertise. 🙂

Hi
According to the link below Photoshop only needs Open CL V1.1

On that basis I would not change cards yet.

Thanks Dave, I couldn't find any more support for the 1.1 version on the AMD website.
One more thought - could an old (and I'm talking ancient) Adobe PS installation affect the functionality of the new CC? I'm loathe to uninstall that as I still use it and don't have the discs to reinstall anymore. But if it's definitely/almost certainly that, I would be happy to try it.

Hi Meg
I doubt your old version would make a difference , although if we run out of ideas it might be worth trying.
I would try the following, one at a time in this order:
1. Disable GPU support altogether in Preferences. Close and restart Photoshop then try re-enabling it.
2. Try a full preference reset . Go to Preferences - General - Reset Preferences on Quit - click OK, then close and restart Photoshop
3. Uninstall Photoshop, using the CC desktop app, run the CC Cleaner tool - then re-install
Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems
4. Contact Adobe support. They can look directly at your machine and may be able to see an issue that we are missing when we are working on descriptions alone

Hi Dave,
Thanks very much for your feedback. Unfortunately, nothing has worked. I've exhausted Adobe support too. As far as they can see, I do have a supported graphics card and everything should work... only it doesn't. I really don't know what else to do. 😞

Meg you can install prior version of Photoshop. The can co exist with CC 2017. Even 32 bit and 64 bit installs of the save version can coexists. Look at my start menu. I use CC 2014 IMO newer version of Photoshop have too many bugs and know compelling new features.

Hi,
Thank you for that suggestion - it's definitely worth a shot.
I have tried reinstalling the current PS and ended up with even less functionality (ARGH). It doesn't even see a GPU anymore.
How can I install a previous version of CC? My dashboard only seems to have the latest one to install.
The feature I really need access to right now that isn't working is Oil Paint. I'm not sure which versions do/don't have that.

I've found this how to.. I'll give it a try tomorrow. 🙂 Fingers crossed I may find a solution in an older version!

May I just ask if you have any update on this? Were you able to resolve the issue? We pretty much have the same issue. Thank you! 🙂 megc24059105

I've been experiencing same isuse. Except mine shuts down randomly when I'm working with 3D. I thought graphics card is the problem, so I got replacement, but the issue remains the same. Sometimes I can work for hours, sometimes it happens every 30 minutes and I have to always close PS and open again.
There is one thing that helped me and it's restarting the PS preferences and clearing everything out. However, that doesn't solve the issue and those are just extra annoying steps you gotta do.
I never had same issues with previous versions of PS, it started with PS 2020 with old graphics and with the new one also. Currently I have Radeon RX 5700 XT and I don't have any issues with it except PS 3D function.
