Hello.  I am new to Photoshop and very new to 3D and video timeline.  I am simply trying to make a planet I made spin.  I have watched tons of youtube videos and read a bunch of google posts and nothing seems to work except one I found saying to use 3D mesh.  I used the stop watch at the 1st position then moved the time over to 1 sec then rotated the planet on the Y axis then clicked the stop watch again.  This worked except that it is super super choppy/laggy yet in the video I watched it was smooth.  Thanks in advance for any help.  Gary2019-07-30.png

Hi Gary,

As the 3D planet rotation is Laggy in Photoshop, it might be due to the system configuration. Could you please post Photoshop's Help > System Info dialog text here?

Also, are you viewing the rotation after rendering the 3D planet or just playing it on the timeline?

Try rendering it and view it in a different application: 3D rendering and saving in Photoshop

Regards,

Sahil

Now I have a second question.  I saved a 3D image I was working on (not rendered) and when I re-opened it there is this black shadowy stuff on it.  I closed and re-opened multiple times but its still there.  Thanks2019-07-30 (1).png

Thanks for sharing the system info, please try rendering the planet as it would play at a normal speed after rendering.

Also, for the second issue try scrolling down the Layers panel and see if you can find a layer which might have those shadows and turn it off by clicking on the eye icon.

Hi and thanks for the responses. I did look for a layer that had those

wierd shadows but could not find one. I tried deselecting cast shadows but

no help. I was wondering if you could recommend a free tutorial for

beginners regarding 3D and animation. Thanks again!! Gary

The preview playback speed will depend on both the size of your image canvas and the playback rate.

Looking at your zoom level , it looks like you have picked a very large pixel size for your image. For video renders work no higher than your intended video output or you will find that each frame takes far too long to render (remember when finally rendered it will use ray tracing rather than the GPU preview render). So if your intended output is a full HD video use 1920 x 1080 pixels for your image canvas. If your intended output is to a gif - then reduce the canvas size further still.

You have also chosen 30fps as the framerate in your timeline. That should render fine in a video format such as mp4 but will be too fast for a gif. I normally limit gifs to around 12-15fps. Any faster and some browsers actually slow the playback down.

Thankyou. Thats quite a bit of info for me but I think I understand. I

rendered the video and it did quite fast as an MP4. When I played it on a

viewer it worked well. My next question is can an MP4 be put into a

timeline? I want to add orbiting moons and I assumed the best/easiest way

to work on multiple 3d timeline animations would be to make one item its

own video and then do the next and put them all together later? I am sorry

Im such a newb I have only been using photoshop for about a month and the

3d and timeline for a week or so. My only experience before that was about

4 months working with GIMP. I really appreciate your help!! Gary

Yes - you can open an mp4 as a video layer. Again the preview may not play at full speed/smoothness. You can of course reduce the preview resolution in the timeline to improve smoothness - this does not affect the final render

However - you should be able to put multiple objects (in your case moons)  in the same 3D layer and animate each mesh. Or make them on separate 3D layers and then use "merge 3D layers" to bring them all into the same space where they will share lighting. That way the moons will cast a shadow on your planet as they pass.

Thankyou. I did try this inbetween your emails and the mp4 has a black

background. Is that because it is not a GIF or did I do something wrong

when I rendered the video?

Do you mean your 3D layer with multiple objects is rendering black?   It should not, what exact version of Photoshop are you using? If you are not sure please go to Help>System info and press copy. Then paste the info here.

Im using the latest version of photoshop I just got it a couple weeks ago.

And I was referring to the MP4 of the rotating planet I made. There was no

background when I made it, or should I say the background was transparent,

but when I rendered the timeline video it added a black background. Thanks

The MP4 files don't support transparency, so any any transparency will be rendered in the background colour

Hi

Thanks for posting the system info - I see no problems in that info.

As far as those spurious shadows - I can't see from the screenshots what is causing them But I would try the following.

1. Go to Preferences - Performance and try checking Use legacy compositing.

2. Go to the 3D panel and turn off the visibility of each object and material in turn. If you can narrow it down to one object or material you can take it from there.

I'll be leaving the office shortly so may not see further posts for a while but there are others who also use 3D who may be able to help so keep posting.
