Application crashes when opening RAW files

When trying to open a RAW file from ACR the RAW editor screen disappears and the application crashes. The PS app shows as Not Responding in Task Manager. This just suddenly happened in the last few days and my PC has shown no errors or crashes since it last worked.

I have tried:

 - Going back to version 12.2 and every version inbetween

 - Going back to ACR version 11.4.1 (both were working happily before)

 - Disabling the graphics accelerator and resetting Photoshop to defaults.

 - Uninstalling Acronis software completely

 - Several different types of RAW files - CR2, ARW, SR2

Jpeg and TIFF files open and edit no problem.

However, if I then use the ACR filter it crashes when returning to Photoshop

Windows defender shows no blocked apps. All updates are installed.

ACR versions 12.xxx have never worked on my PC as the lag was unbearable.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can troubleshoot this issue? PLEASE! Slowly going crazy!

Hi

I know you mentioned that you disabled the graphics accelerator, was that in Photoshop or ACR, if not in ACR try disabling it from there to see if it helps, go to Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw

Thank you Ged. Curious why the latest update should try to enable this? The first version 12.x disabled my ageing graphics processor in PS and ACR and I just assumed that when the latest updates were installed that it would remain disabled. The latest update decided to give it another go. Mistake!

I have now installed all the latest updates for PS and ACR and all is tickety-boo. Many thanks.

I assume you mean version 21x

Since version 21.2 was introduced it has caused issues for some people with certain GPU's not been detected, so you where lucky that Photoshop actually detected your's.

If Photoshop detects your GPU OK it will be added to the preferences in PS and sometimes in ACR and sometimes ACR won't detect it even if Photoshop does, it's an Adobe thing 🙂

I was referring to the version of ACR. When it went to version 12 and above it became very laggy, with the crop and guided transform tools taking an age to refresh the screen. I had to go back to the 11.4.1 version. Generally, the latest versions of PS worked okay. For some reason the latest release of PS must have also updated my ACR, despite the auto-update being switched off in CC. Now at the latest version of ACR, crop and guided transform are still laggy, but usable. I assume this is because I no longer have a graphics accelerator enabled. Thanks for your help.
