Automaticly change brush black/white in relation to a mask?

Is there any way, to automatically (script?) have the brush selected, in the opposite colour from what the mask is? Say I create a curves adj. layer, mask is white, then the brush in black is automatically selected? And if I choose to invert the curves layer to black, the foreground color of the brush changes to white.

I doubt that this lends itself to be done in a truly meaningful manner.

But maybe I am misunderstanding or overthinking the issue …

What happens if you don’t invert the Layer Mask but instead fill it with the opposing color?

What should happen if you select a Layer Mask on which you already painted?
