The blend modes within Apply Image have stopped working for me. In my attached screenshots you can see it work in normal mode but as soon as I switch it to screen the layer mask goes white. It seems to work fine in Calculations and within layer blending mode, it's just Apply Image that has this issue

And I wonder what exactly you are achieving with this approach that you could not achieve with Blend if-settings.

Are you applying Filters to the Layer Mask later on?

I use a gaussian blur on the mask after apply image. I think you're right, the mask I was trying to create is done with Calculations. It's been awhile since I used this technique so got a little confused there. Thank you
