Hi,
I can not deselect in Photoshop, not with command + D and not by deselecting from the menu, the area is greyed out. Please help, it's driving me nuts.

I have part of it figured out, command + D works to deselect a selection, great. Now I want to figure out how to deselect a tool. I'm completely new to photoshop and almost want to give up.

No need to give up, there's always plenty of help on this forum.
All the tools have shortcuts, if you hover the mouse over each tool it will disaply the shortcut for that tool

You can also use the Discover panel

And to make sure: This refers to Selections as in »marching ants«, not to selecting Layers or Channels.
