Can't Create/Open new File - Photoshop CC

Hi there,

I just purchased Creative Cloud recently, went to go open up Photoshop today and it won't allow me to create new files or open existing PSDs:

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoWKJbIf3BI

I can, however, operate in Acrobat and Illustrator just fine.

I'd first googled around a bit to see if anyone else had the problem, noticed there had been a few threads. My troubleshooting steps thusfar.

     1. secpol.msc > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode (disabled)

     2. Took ownership of Adobe directories at C:\Program Files\Adobe, C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe, C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe, C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe

     3. secpol.msc > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode (enabled)

     4. Trashed Preferences on startup.

Pertinent bits of info:

OS: Windows 8.1 (64 bit)
GPU: EVGA GTX 560ti (latest drivers)
Photoshop CS6 via Creative Cloud.

Any help would be much appreciated! It's working fine on my laptop (Mac OS 10.8) but the desktop is a little sketchy with Photoshop.

I mentioned that my drivers were updated already. I don't see how it could be a hardware issue when everything else on my computer does not give me problems.

And clearly I'm not the only one with the issue. Thanks

I was flicking through all the comments and I realised that several times you stated that it may be problem to with your Nvidia driver but im running a AMD which shows that it may be a problem to do with the actual files in Photoshop, possibly preference files or setup/run files.

Also I realised this post was made a year ago so how hasn't the problem been figured out or fixed yet.

I am also having this problem but my circumstances are a bit different. Everything was working fine but then I went to clean my keyboard and mouse while PS was on and now I can't do anything with it. I can't even draw on an open document without it disappearing the second I let go of my mouse. I also re-installed PS after the problem but now I cant even open and new or pre-existing document. All my drivers are up to date and all other Adobe products work fine. Also I have no third party extensions or anything custom on PS for that matter. Any help would be greatly appreciated but seeing as this thread is pretty old I am assuming this will not be fixed

I've been dealing with this ever since cc came out. The answer I got from Adobe was pretty much "get used to it".

Hi everyone, I recently encountered this issue of Photoshop not opening files -- or it opens but the file or working area doesn't update with the file so I can work on it. I traced back the problem to the fact that I also recently enabled RAPID mode for my Samsung SSD.

This is the dashboard for Samsung Magician with RAPID mode disabled:

ssd.png

If you have a SSD like this with RAPID mode feature (which essentially uses your system RAM as cache), you'd need to disable it until Adobe finds a workaround for this.

I hope this helps those who are applicable, and good luck to all!

Hrmm. I can tell with with Windows 10 Technical Preview that issue is no longer an issue. As I haven't experienced the issue since going to the 10 TP. But if I go back to 8.1 I will for sure try the samsung trick. I'm running the 840 EVO 750GB for the C: drive.

Just as another data point. I am experiencing the exact same issue. I'm running Photoshop CC with Windows 8.1 Pro. There was a routine update to my computer when I shut down last night. Now Photoshop will open but it will not create a new file or open an existing file. No error is given, it simply returns to the standard Photoshop screen without any file open.

I'm in the exact same boat.  Windows 8.1 using CC and a NVIDIA card.  Rebooting PC seems to correct the issue for a few minutes, and then the issue will resume disallowing me to perform any actions such as saving a file, opening a file, and more.  I'm continuing to try things out, and I will post if I find a solution.

I have this same problem. It recently started for me. I can't open files directly with Photoshop CC. I can open them using my finder (I'm on latest and greatest Mac OS and all apps are updated on CC). I also, occasionally, am not allowed to place files either. It happens after I've worked in PS for awhile. I have to close and re-open everything. Killing my productivity.

I hope there is a fix for this soon! I haven't installed any plugins or done anything out of the ordinary with Photoshop. It just stated happening. The only possibility I can see is maybe an issue with Suitcase Fusion (font manager) somehow conflicting with Photoshop. Does anyone else experiencing this issue have Suitcase installed?

I had the same issue but figured a ridiculous way to fix it (worked for me at least).

  1. I exited Photoshop completely by going to File > Exit
  2. Then I opened a command prompt and executed: echo off | clip
  3. That command clears the clipboard
  4. Launched PS and was able to open a new file

I have no idea if this will work for you all as it was the first time I had this issue but I thought I'd share nonetheless!

Thank you. I am able to open a file the first time I open Photoshop. But once I start opening files it starts throwing the error message again. So I have to close all files, exit PS and then re-open. I've just been using the finder to open files now until they release a new update. Or perhaps I need to uninstall and reinstall. I haven't tried that yet.

Thanks for sharing anyways!

before any solution from the above....

try:

-press ESC after attempting to open a file

-pressing CTRL+SHIFT+S (save-as) supposedly resizes the window to it's default size.

Solved in most cases...

Hello,

Like many of you I’m experiencing similar issues with the largest complaints being:

1) Photoshop (PS CC, CS6, & CS3) works intermittently and is unstable

2) Can’t open files > files are located through the dialogue but do not open when selected.

3) Can’t save files > open files will not save using “Save”, “Save As” or “Save for Web”

4) Can’t create new files > dialogue opens but after providing values and executing nothing occurs

Also like most here, Photoshop will briefly work following a reboot allowing for normal use.

As for how the saga started, while working on a file in CS3 (yes – I know read below), my workstation locked up, and crashed – meaning I experienced a windows 8.1 “sad face” blue screen. For clarity, this is the first time this has occurred on what has been up till now a problem free machine. I assumed following the unexpected restart and obvious issues that some form of registry corruption, file lock, or session related problems to be a rather simple issue to fix. I was mistaken. As of today, I’ve invested about ten hours into the problem.

As for steps I’ve taken to remedy: (*Note these aren’t in any specific order as to when they were performed)

- Cleared PS preferences

- Opened PS clicked, “ESC” after file open attempts

- Press CTRL+SHIFT+S (save-as) *This is useless on multiple displays

- Reverted Win 8.1 to a restore point

- Updated graphic drivers from NVIDIA’s website

- Uninstalled and reinstalled CS3

- Manually removed files and folders associated with CS3 including APP data and temp files

- Uninstalled and reinstalled CS6 MC

- Manually removed files and folders associated with CS6 MC including APP data and temp files

- Installed a trial version of PS CC

- Uninstalled default printer(s)

- Performed Windows update

- Update .NET Framework

- Removed network shares and tested files exclusively on the local disk

- Disabled and enabled version queue

Being completely frustrated, I left my office, went home and regrouped a bit. After a bit more research I performed a remote desktop session to my workstation so I could continue to test and try to resolve the problem. What I found most interesting is that during my testing over RDP, EVERY VERSION of Photoshop (CS3, CS6, & PS CC) worked perfectly without issue. Now, given what little knowledge I have of graphics cards I have to assume that during RDP there’s only basic video drivers or lack of a better term, “a visual safe mode” for faster rendering.

UPDATE 05/21/2015 - POSSIBLE WORK AROUND

Following last night's discovery I used my laptop to RDP to my primary workstation with all of it's displays turned on. Next I disconnected from RDP, logged into the primary and within minutes, PS stopped functioning properly. On a hunch I rebooted the machine and physically turned off all of my monitors, reconnect via RDP and executed Photoshop.  After a quick test, I could open files, and save files. I then disconnected from RDP, turned on my workstation displays and since that point I've been able to use Photoshop on my primary workstation without issue for almost 6 hours of heavy use.

I don't know enough about how Photoshop uses or initializes video drivers and cards, but I'm speculating that the procedure above via RDP loads the application with limited display support as there are no display in use. To further that thinking, if I close photoshop and reopen (without the RDP "fix"), the problems described return within just a few moment of use.

Here’s my photoshop system dump just in case anyone wants to offer up any thoughts:

Still not fixed? This has been an issue since the good part of the past 3 years.

I never shut down my PC because I have too many things open at all times. It's my work space.

You don't clean out your whole desktop and store your keyboard, speakers, mouse and monitors in a closet every time you go to bed now, do you?

I feel obligated to ask for my 300 euros back and counting... I was lucky enough that I could use your programs for free before I went professional.

Now it's just plain annoying.

Fix it. Thanks.

Have a look at this thread: Photoshop not opening/creating files - Super User

The last person I gave this to fixed the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling his printer driver.

This is obviously a bug. How do we check what causes this? There should be a logging tool somewhere built in...

try {

     open_file;

     if ( open_file = false )

          output_error( str error );

}

Right?

We're basically volunteer users. We can suggest fixes and workarounds, but we are not Adobe employees and don't have access to the source code.

This is ridiculous. I just upgraded to Win10, wiped out everything, fresh install on all Adobe products. First use...photoshop, can't open or create a new document. FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's have the team take a step back from worrying about new features or RAW updates...let's see if we can just get users able to create/open files. Yes...that's a project manager I would want to follow.

ADD Me to the list of people who installed windows 10 and now can get anything to open in photoshop CC 2015. It's the cloud version that you get updates for all the time........

If this won't fix I'll have to go back to win 8 which was making everything run just fine. (Smacking head against table: WHY DID I UPDATE TO 10?!?!)
