Content Aware scale problem - not protecting alpha 1 channel

Hi, I am using the latest version of Photoshop.

I have followed all the instructions I can find to select an area and create an Alpha channel, which I can then (theoretically) protect when I do a content aware scale.

It isn't working.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix? Or am I doing something hopelessly wrong.

BTW it is a PSB file, because it is a stitched vertical panorama. Don't know if this makes a difference.

Thanks

Dalice
