Content Aware Tool has checkerboard in selected area - why?

Hello. When I use the Content Aware Tool I can usually select an area, hit Delete, then hit Enter, and get the results I want. However, in some images, when I select an area and hit Delete, the checkerboard appears inside the selected area and I'm not sure what to do. In the images that I see the checkerboard, the Sample All Layers box is highlighted but not checked. In the images that I don't see the checkerboard and have no issues, the Sample All Layers box is shaded. Does anyone know why this happens? For both of these examples I'm only working on the Background layer. Thanks for any advice. (I use Windows 10)

Many thanks Ali, exactly what I need. I still don't understand why I have to follow this procedure on a few images but most of them I don't. Maybe its a glitch. Thanks again. Be well and stay safe!
