Copying the area selected by using the polygonal lasso tool

I use the polygonal lasso to cover a section of an image.

I then try to copy the area enclosing the lasso.

Photoshop says it cannot copy because the selected area is EMPTY.

So what's happening please?

Do you have different layers? Maybe just change the selected layer that has the image in it.

There are 5 layers and I selected a part of the background layer using the polygonal tool.

I notice that copying the area emclosed by the polygonal lasso is OK with some images but not with others.

Strange. A bit unpredictable.
