Cropping a sky image from my Library - Photoshop

I have my sky replacement images in my Library. When I drag one onto an image in comes in as a layer. All good. But sometimes that sky image has some mountains or trees at the bottom and I want to crop the sky layer. But if I do it crops both the sky and the underlying layer. I have tried making a duplicate image of that sky layer and crop it but that doesn't solve the problem. How can I crop an image brought onto a layer from the library?

Thanks. A friend solved it. Rather than drag in as with transform, double click on the sky in the layer and it comes in as a separate image. I can crop that and then move to a layer over the original image.
