Ctrl+J now copying rectangular bounding box as well as the selected pixels

Help! In the latest Photoshop 22.0.0 I find Ctrl+J is copying to a new layer a rectangular box bounding the pixels selected as well as the selected pixels. I used this feature extensively in previous versions and I'm at a loss as to how to make it work as before.

You most likely are having  the Move tool displaying the transform controls.  Remove the check mark from the move tool option bar Show Transform controls.  Photoshop 2021 version 22 does seem to have an issue adding 1px black strokes when it should not be added. If its a bounding control box it most likely the move tool it it a stroke its most likely a version 22 bug.

I'm not using the Move Tool. I'm using the Quick Selection Tool followed by ctrl-j

Hi,

To show and example, if I use the Quick Selection Tool to select the three pot sherds in this photo I get the marching ants round the edge of the potsherds

Quick Select on Pot Sherds.jpg

If I then hit ctrl-j and examine the newly created layer I have not just the pot sherds but a bounding box

Result of ctrl-J on pot sherds selection.jpg

In a previous version of Photoshop I would get just the potsherds in the new layer.

What am I doing wrong, or what has changed in Photoshop?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I do not have a problem on my Wibdows 10 systeme with Photoshop 2021 like you have. Ctrl+J creates a new layer which containes the content selected.

Thanks for trying this.

This is baffling!

Even if I use the Edit>Copy command and then manually create a new layer and Edit>Paste I get the same erroneous result.

Here's my System Info:

Are there some hidden parameters to the Copy command that I don't know about?

Thanks for the suggestion.

In my Photoshop installation under Edit>Preferences>Performance>Graphics Processor Settings

it says "Detected Graphics Processor: Unable to detect information"

and the "Use Graphics Processor" box is unchecked.

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/basic-trouble-shooting-steps.html

"Detected Graphics Processor: Unable to detect information"

That seems like a bad sign, but the operation should be able to be run on the CPU.

Well...

...that was a disaster.

I tried Edit>Preferences>General then clicked on "Reset Preferences on Quit" and restarted Photoshop. Now:

1. Any jpg file I open in Photoshop results in a completely black canvas.

2. I can open a CR2 in Camera Raw and that looks OK but as soon as I hit Open to open in Photoshop I get a brief flash of the image on the canvas and then it disappears to a black canvas.

Do you have two monitors connected/two graphics cards?

Have you tried seeing if your graphics card has an update?

In the meantime, since you did reset your prefs go back to performance - confirm Use Graphics Processor is off.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for reply.

When I couldn't view any jpg file at all I panicked and uninstalled v22.

I have just installed the only other version Adobe offers me which 21.2.4.

I can now open jpg files OK but the issue with Ctrl-j copying a rectangular box of pixels rather than just the pixels selected remains!

This version 21.2.4 is more recent than the version I was previously using (20.something I think) which allowed me to use ctrl-j absolutely without a problem. However, Adobe seems to have uninstalled this version without asking me and I can't therefore go back to it. Grrr!

Edit>Preferences>Performance still says "Detected Graphics Processor: Unable to detect information" and the box is still unticked.

I do not have a separate monitor. Windows Project says "PC Screen Only".

I'm getting desperate now! Any constructive advice or suggestions welcome!

You have two graphics cards listed - an AMD and an NVIDIA. You need to deactivate one of them.

Kevin,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried disabling the two graphics cards in turn and each time restarted Photoshop, but the problem with ctrl-J copying a bounding rectangle of pixels rather than the selected pixels persisted in both cases.

Thanks for all your advice guys - much appreciated by this relative novice!

I have just used the NVIDIA Control Panel to ensure Photoshop.exe and sniffer.exe were added and also selected "High-Performance NVIDIA Processor" as the preferred graphic processor.

Now in Photoshop Edit>Preferences>Performance>Graphics Processor Settings I see a change: the Detected Graphics Processor shows my NVIDIA processor rather "No Information Available" and also the "Use Graphics Processor" tick box is now tickable.

However, if I tick this box and then open any jpg file I get a totally blank black canvas.

If I untick this box, I can open a jpg file as normal, but - as before - if I select any area of pixels using the Quick Selection Tool and then cut/paste to a new layer or use ctrl-j I get a rectangular area of pixels rather than just the selected area.

Any more thoughts would be appreciated!

Is there a way of going back to Photoshop v20? This worked fine for me! I only noticed this problem with copying pixels in a selection when v21 installed and I assumed it was a bug and would go away with a later realease, so I carried on using v20. To my horror my installation has been updated to v22, the problem persists, and I can't seem to get back to v20.

What is the date of your Nvidia Device driver for your nvidia adapter? Is it the latest studio device driver available?

My NVIDIA Control Panel>System Information says:

GeForce GTX 1050

Driver version: 385.54

However, when I go to the NVIDIA support site this model is not listed!

The closest match I can find is:

GeForce GTX 1650

and a range of Studio Driver versions are offered for this, the latest being:

Driver Version: 457.30 - Release Date: 2020 November 17

Do you think this would this work?

I'm not trying to do anything magical -  just select pixels, then copy and paste them.

The problem with this very basic operation occurs even with the "Use Graphics Processor" box unticked!

Again - it wouldnt matter to untick the box. Your Graphics Card is not compatible from what I can tell with the latest PS versions.

You can only go back 1 version of CC apps, so 21 would be the last available version.

My NVIDIA GTX 1050 has:

2379 ops/sec benchmark

Direct X 12 support

2GB GPU memory

In what respect is it incompatible with Photoshop v21 and v22?
