Curves - Auto Color Correction Options = Crash

Hi,
I have done a bit of looking around, but I have not found any reason why after the recent update to CC2017 from CC2015 it now appears now has a problem with the curves tool, when Using the Auto Color correction. I place a curves layer, and make no changes to it, and then by holding the Alt Key, and pressing Auto, the 4 main lists of curves correction appear ( as normal). However when I choose the first two, options ( Enhance Monochromatic contrast, or Enhance Per Channel Contrast) Photoshop will abruptly quit and crash. Then windows looks for an answer that never happens. I have just recently did the upgrade for this, and I was hoping this would get fixed, but it appears that is not the case.

Is this video card related or is this just a bug?

Please help, I love the looks that this Curves gives, but its continuously crashing, my machine and I can't move forwards.

No crash here - I just tried your steps on an 8 bit and a 16 bit image.

I am using CC2017.1 (r.207) on Windows 10.

Can you give some further info & paste your system info (from the help menu)

Hi Davescm.

I have also placed a screen shot the moment before it faithfully fails.

If I click on the "Snap Nutral Midtones" the crash does not happen, but if this is unchecked, then it always crashes on the first two options.

The only other issue I really have is the flicker of the video driver in ACR, but everything else that I use works flawlessly. This worked finr in 2015, but the change came in 2017. (for me) I was hoping that the recent update would work but its not.

Sorry for delay- I did a bit more experimentation and this seems to be image dependent. It seems to happen if there are significant areas of full black and full white.

I tried a 1000 x 1000 pixel image with a black to white gradient - it will crash. However a similar gradient from not quite black to not quite white will work. CC2015.5.2 also crashes - but CS6 works OK

Try resetting preferences. I had a conversation with an Adobe engineer a few weeks ago and with CC 2017.1.1 and reset preferences neither of us could get the crash to re-occur.

Resetting preferences worked! I found a file that Photoshop was crashing on (Curves Adjustment Layer > Auto > Monochromatic > 0% White clipping. That part worked, but when I'd pull the curve it would crash) and now following the same process results in expected behavior. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully that'll be the case henceforth.

And for me, with CC2019.1 (fresh install - nothing to re-set preferences) the same problem is back again, constant crashes, I also linked this thread to the new "Crash Report tool" that now pops up when Photoshop crashes.

Cool feature, but the crash, for the re-occouring 5th time now is frustration to the max.. I love that feature.. when it works.. Make it stick this time!

This still happens to me in CC 20.0.9

This has been happening for years. For me it only occurs when you choose Enhance Monochromatic Contrast without checking the snap neutral midtones box. All other choices work fine. It seems to be random... when it starts happening, it keeps happening until I reset preferences. Then everything works fine until it randomly starts again...

I have not upgraded yet. I like my current sweet spot with this version and OS 10.14.6.

I had the auto curves problem this morning for the first time in a long while.

This issue has been around since at least CS4... I could never figure it out and still cannot.

I just reset the preferences and it goes away for a while...
