Hi.

I am completely new to photoshop and  intend to make  a collage consisting of different pictures. I intend to put every picture on a separate layer, and start with opening the first picture when then becomes the background layer. Then I create a new layer, mark it and open another picture in that layer. Then the first picture/layer disappears. What am I doing wrong?

Can you post some screen shots of what is happening? Are the photos opening in new documents or are you placing the files to be in the same document?

How are you opening your second picture? It sounds like you are using File>Open which creates a new document.

Instead used File > Place Embedded for the second, third .....etc images

You are doing this the long way.

  1. Make a new document to your final size.
  2. Tidy up the names of files you wish to import if needed
  3. Drag from your desktop the icons of images files onto your photoshop canvas
  4. Scale or rotate if needed
  5. Hit enter for each image, which will create a layer named to your file
