Editing original in character animator

I'm trying to edit the snowman bluster in character animator, so i edit original (windows by the way) and it has it has opening in AI which i don't have installed, I want to edit it in PS.  When it opens PS it opens it as a PDF with one layer and unable to edit properly.  Interestingly the background for that puppet exports as a PS so I can edit it. In the properties it has where it saves it and puppet.ai, how can i make it change to psd?

This is driving me nuts, other puppets that I open I can edit in PS. Please help!
