The efficiency readout isn't important - as long as you have a fast scratch disk and enough space. It just means the scratch disk is taking over most of the working temp data. It's normal when working with big files.

It was much more important with spinning hard drives. Then it mattered to keep as much as possible in RAM and off the scratch disk.

Now, with extremely fast NVMe drives (aka PCIe M.2), the scratch disk is no longer the bottleneck it used to be.

32 GB RAM is enough to handle anything. The rest goes to scratch, but it will do that no matter how much RAM you have installed.

The primary scratch disk should be on your NVMe drive, with secondary scratch on the other drive. A 500GB system drive will normally work well for this, as long as it isn't starting to fill up with junk. In that case clean it out. A fairly standard configuration of OS and applicatiions should not take up much more than 100GB or so. That leaves 400 for scratch, with the second disk for eventual overflow.

If you have a second, unused M.2 slot on your motherboard, a second NVMe drive is the best investment you can make.

@D Fosse,

Thanks for your answer ! For now, i have all my system programs( PS included) on the NVMe and the scratch disk is a SSD with about 300 Go available.

Should it be ok ?

Thanks

I put the scratch disk on a different one than the system as i read it on different websites. Is it wrong ?

That was basically true for spinning drives, with a read/write head that could only be in one place at a time. SSDs don't have that limitation, whether NVMe or SATA, and there's no particular problem with having the scratch disk on the system drive.

So in this case I'd put primary scratch on the system drive, if you have sufficient free space on it, at least 250-300 GB. Then set up the other as secondary scratch.

In any case, your original question regarding efficiency is unimportant. It just means you are working with large files and it's normal. I don't pay any attention to it.

Everything you do in Photoshop gets written to the scratch disk. RAM just holds data in immediate use, but with large files, the ratio will by necessity be heavily shifted to scratch - aka "low efficiency". There is no such thing as "enough RAM", no matter how much you have installed.

@D Fosse,

Thank you so much : I changed my first scratch to be the primary disk : NVMe ( 322 Go remaining, and programs using 142 Go) and second scratch SSD ( 400 Go remaining) !
