Erasing the image, not the selecting region

Hello, to whom it may concern my photoshop is not working correctly. Whenever I select a region using the magnetic lasso tool, the region selected is saved, while the rest of the image get deleted. My goal is to delete the selected region, so the background of my photo is gone and left with the outline of me. However my photoshop does the opposite, dit eletes the non selected region. 

There has been a previous forum post about this issue but it has not helped me. I have watched at least 3 tutorials on how to do it and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Please someone help me.
