How to apply gradient instead of font color on font in multiple line......

Thats not help,.... it is aplying gradiens on entire layer,....contrary shadows, strokes or other efects are aplly on every letter separetly 🙂

one would think that such a sophisticated and expensive program will have some option for font color as a gradient, .... as MS Word has

What you apparently want to achieve with Layer Styles on Type Layers is not possible in Photoshop so far, so that the answer is not what you wanted it to be doesn’t mean it’s not the answer nonetheless. 

And your assumption

seems essentially mistaken. 

Layer Styles work on the basis of a Layer’s transparency, Photoshop does (for this) not recognize the indivudual letters as separate entities, the effects just conform to the transparency. 

If you decrease the tracking enough, for example, you can notice that »Inner Shadow« does not care that it is two distinct letters that touch, they are in that regard just one area. 

Edit: If a Gradient Overlay was applied to individual letters it might noticably »jump« between upper and lower case letters, letters with ascenders and descenders, punctuation marks, …

If the issue is truly important to you you might want to look into OpenType SVG Fonts.

This is not possible in Photoshop, another program must be used
