Healing Brush Tool preview not showing

I dropped my pen on my tablet accidentally and some magic "convenience" key got triggered. As a consequence, the "preview" brush is just a circle without a preview and resetting the tool is ineffective at fixing this. This renders the tool utterly useless. So, what is this "magic key" that puts the tool in this useless state? With that information, I can disable the magic so it doesn't happen again and make the tool usable again. Another question: why can't this be rectified by resetting the tool?

Also: Please don't make finger fumbles so intractably difficult to undo. Thank you.

A full OS/X reboot and it's working.

So, Adobe, how about an "undo tool change"?
