How do I make a background transparent while maintaining the white object?

Hello, 

I'm trying to make the background transparent in this photo. Those steps are really easy but then the white in my object (the hands) becomes transparent too. How do I keep the white hands but make the background transparent?

If you used the Magic Wand tool without success, try it again, but this time before clicking on the area surrounding the hands, go to the Options bar and choose Contiguous. Then click to select the outer area followed by  Delete.
