I'm afraid you won't find another approach
Before showing the dialog box, save the current image to the desired directory, then open it as a preview.
You could also use Generator Image Assets: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop/stop-generator-image-assets/m-p/9550199

How to use Image Assets for this? You mean exporting as alternative for saving?

Yes, export as an alternative for saving.
With Image Assets saving automatically occurs whenever the document is changed, then this can be used to display interactive previews (if we run the preview window in palette mode via bridge talk). I don’t know how this can be used, but it’s possible.

If the script is constructed the way another steps happen one after other then you cannot use BridgeTalk as it would disturb generating assets. Instead of that you may use vbscript that let generator to end its job (even if it takes only milliseconds to export a layer to file).

You can't change native dialogs, you must create your own to do what you want.
Photoshop: Select a layer and 'show this in viewport' or 'zoom to'
