A friend of mine passed away and I am trying to take a few of the photos of him and make him look transparent and add them to other photos like an angel in the pics. Can anyone assist me in this? I am new to photoshop.

Drop the opacity of the layer in the Layers panel.

There are several things you can do. Select subject, gradient effect and like Jane-e said drop the opacity on the layer.

You can put your foreground picture (the person) on a layer above the background picture then add a layer mask to make areas of the foreground image transparent or semitransparent. You paint on the mask with a brush and where the mask is white, the pixels on the associated layer are visible. Where a mask is black then the pixels on the associated layer are transparent and the layer below is visible. You can use shades of grey to make parts of the layer semitransparent.

I did this for a flikr group challenge six years ago, but I can't remember the exact steps I used.  It will have used layer effects with Fill opacity set to zero though.  I/we can work out exactly how to do it if it would be useful?
