Image Adjustment Functions Not Working

Hey, everyone. Just doing some simple photo adjustments, and for some reason in the Image-->Adjustment dropdown, "Desaturate" thru "Equalize" are not highlightable.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong. I'm pretty noob, so be kind.

In Photoshop, go to Image > Mode.  Are you working with RGB and 8-bits/channel?
