Is there a trick for evenly spacing things out?

Hi, I'm designing a wedding book where I have to line things up nicely.  I use smart guides and snap to...  and those are great for lining things up in a row (for example the tops and bottoms of the shots here)Screen shot 2010-11-20 at 9.49.49 PM.png  But the vertical lines are where I'm having trouble . I'm good at eyeballing how far I want things apart,  but there has to be a more exact way to space out the images quickly and evenly.  (in this shot I have not lined them up yet... My eye is better than this   )  It's just one of those things that I finally remembered to ask

Thanks in advance,

Cortney

Paul Riggott offered a pretty nifty Script in this thread that may help:

http://forums.adobe.com/message/2929207#2929207

And lining layers up in rows or columns is pretty easy from the options bar or Layer > Align.

Photoshop does not have "Distribute Spacing", which is what you are looking for.

Illustrator or InDesign would have that type of distribution for your layout. It would be a handy feature for Photoshop to have too.

It's damn annoying that Photoshop at version 12 doesn't have a feature to distribute spacing evenly.

Photoshop does have distribute, just select the layers and use Layer -> Distribute -> Horizontal Centers

It doesn't matter the distance between them, its different every time so they are or are not evenly spaced.

Its NOT the horizontal lines I'm worried about.  That snaps nicely!

Its the vertical lines (as in this picture above)  the space BETWEEN the images.  I have to eye ball it or shift+arrow three times or whatever...

That is not what the OP is asking. They want EVEN SPACING between pics.

Cortney: when I have something like this, I just eyeball the spacing, then drop in a white line using the line vector Line Tool set to just a tad wider than the spacing. A bit of  a PITA, but keeps everything consistant.

I'll have to try a line vector.  I've never used those at all so maybe thats the answer for the short term...

Thank you!

Here is a quick example from your image. Just remember to hold the shift key down to keep the lines vertical. Vector shapes will show a gray outline when their layer is targeted, but that outline does not print.

Using distribute will space the layers with the same spacing between them. The script that has been ticked as the correct answer will not it will only space them to the given pixels entered. I know as I wrote the script! You will of course have to set the left and right pictures first before doing the distribute.

Paul,

Your script works great. Cool! But going Layer>Distribute Horizontal Centers does not create even spacing between the images, unless I'm missing something.

I tried the script but I think I messed it up in the "saving to a blank doc" thing.  It wouldn't recognize the jpx, (jsx?  whatever the thing is )

Anyhoo I couldn't get it to work..

You must be missing something as it works fine.

You need to set set the left picture and right picture to the extremities, then select all the layers and run distribute, they will then be all spaced evenly.

I must be. And to be clear, we are talking about going Layer>Distribute Horizontal Centers, not your script. Right?  Maybe I'm confused about "setting the extremities"? Anyway, here is the result I get:

Charles,

I must apologise unreservedly! I was using same sized pictures and then it does space evenly.

It looks like I might need to write a script to do this!

Once again my apologies!

Courtney,

Try using ExtendScript Toolkit to create the script, the editor you are using is saving it as an rtf file, the editor may also be adding control characters to the file that will stop it working.

Paul, It just makes your current script all the more useful! It works fine with variously sized images.

Cortney,

Past the code into Word, go Save As and choose Plain Text. Navigate your save Applications>Photoshop>Presets>Scripts. Replace the .txt with .jsx along with your name for the script. It should save.

In Photoshop, open your file, target the layers to distribute and go File>Scripts>Browse and navigate to Paul's script. You'll see spacing options as it starts to run.

No, it does not save properly.  It adds the txt.   I've saved it and its in there as Paul.jsx

It just won't run whether I have layers selected or not, it gives me the error msg previously mentioned.

Thanks.

Skip pasting it in a Word file.

Instead paste it into a new Script, in that Script Toolkit application and hit "'Save"; then browse to that file from within Photoshop.
