Issue with one Photoshop Temp file going bigger

Hello everyone (and best wishes for the new year)

I'm encountering a problem for several weeks with Photoshop CC 2020 and previous versions (on PC)

In my C: > user > admin > AppData > Local > Temp folder, I have one and only one temp file of 34,9Go.

It has a name with a series of random numbers that change on each start, but the file remains the same and keep getting bigger.

Obviously I can't delete it while using Photoshop, and when I close the program the file disappears, so I can't see it in the folder. I tried CCleaner and other stuff like that to scan the PC but it didn't work.

I also tried to switch the scratch disk to C: to D:, I change some cache parameters in the program, and here again the problem remains. This temp file seems to don't want to disappear of himself.

It's starting to get worrying because my disk will soon be full because of this file.

Does anyone have a solution to force its deletion ? Thanks in advance for your help !

It sound like you are writings about Photoshop's temp work file that is created by Photoshop when you use Photoshop and is deleted when you close down Photoshop. What is the problem you have with that. I have Photoshop 2020 open now and its been open for some time now. Its temp files is currently over 8GB in size.

You may be able to have Photoshop create the file on a different disk by changing your environments temp settings.

The problem I have is this temp work file doesn't delete when I close Photoshop, otherwise it wouldn't be as big each time I reopen the program, I suppose...

Every time you open Photoshop it will create a temp work file. Photoshop uo and Running

A scratch file is normal. It should be removed when Photoshop closes and then created new when Photoshop re-opens. What is not normal is a 34GB scratch file on opening (although it may grow larger than that in use).

My scratch file on opening Photoshop, no documents open, is less than 6GB. That is on a machine with 64GB of RAM

6 or 8GB wouldn't be a problem for me either, but 30... ^^' On a machine with 32GB of RAM...

Just for clarity when you set Photoshop to use the D drive as scratch , then close and reopen Photoshop does the same file now appear in the root of the D drive?

In that case it is the scratch file which is open all the time Photoshop is open and is removed when Photoshop is closed. Is it that size immediately upon opening Photoshop and with no documents open?

Try holding Shift and starting Photoshop and start the application without loading any optional or third party plug ins

I'm slightly puzzled.

You said in the previous post that you had set your scratch disk to drive D.

But the system info shows it is set to drive C which has 232.3 GB total and 30.4 GB free

I can't see anything else that would cause a large scratch disk file on start up. You may wish to reset your preferences (which contain more than the user preferences) , then set up the scratch disk again.

That does not look normal to me either - try resetting Photoshop Preferences (Preferences > General >Reset Preferences on Quit) then restart.

30GB does seem wrong. Close Photoshop make sure that files is deleted. If not delete it. Then press and hold Shift start Photoshop skip loading optionals plug-ins. Is the temp file Photoshop created 30GB? Starting Photoshop 2020 on my machine I see a 7.8GB temp file created.

CS3 creates a 1.5GB file ,CS6 a 10.2GB file, CC 2014 a 10.4GB file, CC 2018 a 10.6GB file, CC 2019 a 10.6GB file, PS 2020 a 7.8GB file om my machine.

Do you have any other version of Photoshop installed? I have never seen any version of Photoshop where starting creates a 30GB temp file. Have you installed any Photoshop extensions?

I have just the last version (I suppose that previous versions were deleted), and only the Nik Collection extension 😕
