I am learning editing for jewelery. My challenge is in one of my pieces, I have merged all visible layers into a target layer. Then did a quick mask and painted a stones in the piece of jewelry and then un-clicked the quick mask. The part masked is selected perfectly. I then go to Select-Inverse added a new layer but the stone does not appear in the layer and I cannot remove the dotted line from around the selected stone. I want to sharpen the stone image. What am I doing wrong?

When you add the new layer choose Layer > New > Layer Via Copy and the stone will appear in the new layer. You can always remove the dotted line by typing Ctrl / Cmd D.
