Liquify not persistent in documents created using PS 2021

I recently noticed a bug with the Liquify filter in PS 2021. The issue is that the mesh distortion is not properly maintained when applied to a Smart Object if at any time during the workflow the affected Smart Object layer's visiblity is disabled then re-enabled (whether manually by clicking on the visibility, or through a Layer Comp setting).

Below is a screenshot demonstrating the issue. The image of the LEFT is how it SHOULD look after the Liquify filter is applied. The image on the RIGHT is what happens to the Smart Object's mesh after the visiblity or layer comp has been changed. As you can see, it basically resets the mesh to its original state. If I re-edit the Liquify applied to the Smart Object, I can select "Load Last Mesh" and it reapplies the previous changes. Likewise, if I have already saved a mesh file, I can restore the mesh using that. However, as soon as I make any change to the layer's visiblity, the problem returns.

Basically, I noticed this happening with an artwork template file that I use for a series of portraits that I create. The template PSD was created in PS 2020 and still works just fine. But any document created in PS 2021 suffers from this bug. I ran a variety of tests with different documents, switching between 2020 and 2021, including opening PSDs created in the other program and vice versa. Here is the breakdown of my scenario results:

1) Create Document in PS 2021 > Apply Liquify to Smart Object > Liquify Resets Upon Layer Visibility/Layer Comp Change

2) Create Document in PS 2020 > Apply Liquify to Smart Object > Liquify Holds Correctly

3) Create Document in PS 2021 > Apply Liquify to Smart Object > Re-Open Document in PS 2020 > Liquify Resets

4) Create Document in PS 2020 > Apply Liquify to Smart Object > Re-Open Document in PS 2021 > Liquify Holds Correctly

Also of note: If the 2021 PSD is saved when the mesh is properly distorted, the file will still have the correct distortion when it is re-opened later. (But again, the layer visibility error continues.) However, if the 2021 PSD is saved when the mesh is NOT properly distorted, then the file will also have the incorrect distortion when re-opened later.

The common issue between any PSD exhibiting this bug is when it was created in PS 2021, but not the other way around.

Thank you for your assistance with getting this resolved.

Hi,

Yes, here is a screenshot of the layers for the example document that I posted.

Does any Layer (including the SO itself) exceed the Canvas’ borders?

Hi,

Good point and I've already thought of that, too. Yes, there are layers that exceed the canvas' bounds. However, I have tested this in different scenarios and it doesn't make a difference. For example, if I rasterize all smart objects and then crop all layers to the canvas borders, the Liquify filter still resets

As a side note, in the original template file that I created, I also included a single pixel in each corner of the Smart Object so that its size would remain consistent and I could reapply the same Liquify distortion to other layers if needed (such as the Hair layer, for example).

In documents created in PS 2020, even when there are other layers that might exceed the canvas borders, the Liquify filter does not reset. But in newly created documents in PS 2021, it does reset. Furthermore, in 2020 PSD documents, when I open the Liquify filter applied to a Smart Object, it briefly flashes the undistorted mesh version, then a moment later it loads and correctly distorts the mesh as expected. Not so if I open the same PSD that was saved in PS 2021. Even if the mesh is properly distorted upon initial file opening, as soon as I open the Liquify filter the mesh is reset and remains that way.

To reiterate, from all of my testing it only appears to be happening to NEW documents created within PS 2021. If I were to open a PSD created in 2020 that already has the Liquify filter applied to a Smart Object, it opens without issue and the mesh distortion is maintined correctly. But if I open a PSD created in 2021 in either the current version, or PS 2020, the Liquify filter resets.

This is making me wonder if it's not even so much a problem with the Liquify filter itself, but perhaps there's been some change to the PSD file structure in how it is saved? That seems to be the only thing that's different and it is specific to which version of PS was used when the document was first saved. I'm at a loss right now to understand what else might be causing this issue.

I have the same thing happening to me. I use liquify on smart objects as a smart filter. Whenever I want to edit the liquify I have to first click load last mesh as it opens it up with a reset mesh. And if I change any smart filter layer visibility, it resets the liquify mesh (so I have to again edit the liquify filter and load last mesh). If I edit the smart object and apply those changes, it also resets the liquify filter. Very annoying and time wasting.

Finally, I seem to have found a solution that resolves the issue, as explained here:
https://feedback.photoshop.com/conversations/photoshop/photoshop-221-liquify-on-smart-objects-broken...

Resetting the preferences seemed to do the trick for the most part. I'm not sure what the exact issue was, but I've been using Photoshop for many, many years and so my preferences generally would be copied over from each upgrade to the next. So, perhaps there was some minor corruption hidden in the prefs that was messing things up in this specific example. Anyway, I'm relieved that it's now working as expected since this is a critical part of my workflow.

FWIW, the test file that I was using after I had first noticed the issue now functions almost completely as expected. The Liquify distortions on the Smart Objects are retained even with layer visibility changes. The only glitch that I am still encountering is if I manually disable the Liquify filter under the Smart Object, then try to re-enable it. In that case, the mesh is reset and the distortion is gone. But still, this is MUCH improved over what I was experiencing before whenever ANY change to the layer or even other layers was messing up and resetting the mesh distortion.

Also, the glitch seems to only be persistent with the test file from back whenever I first noticed this issue. If I create a brand new document, then everything functions as expected, even when disabling and re-enabling the Liquify effect on the Smart Object. So, the issue is now probably some remnant that's left over from original file.

Resetting did not help.  I have this problem already for a few versions.

Even with content exceeding the canvas, when I don't move my object the mesh should respect the actual pixels it was applied upon!
