Lost the plain black workspace

Help! The black workspace that forms the "background" for opening files has vanished. When I open a file now, it comes up as a floating window and I can see my desktop (and all the mess on it) behind. I try dragging it up to the top but it won't dock. If I open another file, it vanishes altogether. I have the "arrange workspace" on "consolidate all to tabs" which is my normal way of working. It is driving me crazy. I have tried quitting and restarting.

You didn't post a screen shot, so we can only guess. Try these:

  • You've already said "Consolidate all
  • If you are on a Mac, turn on the Application Frame (Window menu)
  • Reset your panels to the current Workspace (Window > Workspace)

In Photoshop go to Window and click on Application Frame.

Are you using a Mac?  If yes then I believe it is called the Application Frame

Thanks all. I have the black workspace back, have consolidated all to tabs, but the files keep vanishing and I find them behind when I minimize Photoshop.

We need a screen shot or two.

Also: go to the Window menu. Do you see your files at the very bottom and can you click them there to bring them to the front?
