Mock-up layers

Hi there so I am a self-taught new Photoshop user. I have been using Photoshop to edit product mock ups for my company. Normally when I open a Photoshop file all the layers are visible however, recently when I click on a Photoshop file it opens as a PDF instead of Photoshop.

More importantly when I open a Photoshop mock-up  file it's only showing one layer which is the background layer.   I have used this set of mockups before so I know there used to be layers and everything worked just fine however, there's only one layer showing up and it's the background layer so I am unable to actually mock anything up.

Please let me know if you have any fixes for this

How you open file? From Photoshop > File > Open or by double clicking file or somehow else? On screenshot it seems you have two applications open and front app is Illustrator. Can you run Photoshop and try again using Open command?

How are you opening your files? Opening Photoshop and using File > Open should work as normal.

If double clicking the psd is opening Adobe Illustrator instead of Photoshop then you need to correct the file associations for psd in your operating system. It looks like you are using a Mac so, if this is your problem, then hopefully a Mac user will come along shortly to advise you. I use Windows here so cannot advise where to change that.

Hi

Computers look at the extension and use that to decide which program to open when you double-click. If it is wrong for you, do this to fix the association:

  • Select the file in Finder
  • Go to File > Get Info (Cmd+I)
  • Choose the correct application
  • Click Change All

Is it all Photoshop files that are opening in Illustrator or just the one?

What do the layers look like when you open the file in Photoshop instead of Illustrator?

Did you save the file as a Photoshop (PSD) file or as a Photoshop PDF file? Normally when you double-click a PDF in Finder, it will open in Mac Preview or Adobe Acrobat, but your file has opened in Adobe Illustrator. The extension is hidden behind the floating Layers panel group, so we can't see what it is.

What I think I'm seeing in Illustrator is that you have at least two groups of files, and I've tried to simulate that here. The group in back has two files and the group in front has three. To put them all into one group, choose Window > Arrange > Consolidate. Then to make your panels docked and not floating, choose Window > Workspace and Reset your current workspace. If you use the workspace called "Essentials Classic" instead of "Essentials", your main tool bar will have all of the tools by default instead of only half of them.

Do any of these posts answer your question? If not, please clarify.
