Need help with Layer Masking

I am attempting to do a Layer mask with text and nothing is happening. My background is Black I place the text as white . I place the image on top of the text layer in the panel. Hit control and the thumbnail to select the text. and then I click the layer mask icon at the bottom. only to have the selection disappear but the image is still there with no changes. I have switched blending option on the layer mask from blend clipped layers to Blend interior effects. and Nothing happened, In the layer properties I can clearly see a  black background with white text. I tried inverting an in both cases nothing happens. I've tried Vector masking and clipping mask and the same thing keeps happening. I'm sure this is somethingtiny that Im overlooking can someone help.

I wouldn't recommend a layer mask in this situation as it is fixed/static.

To mask the upper layer using the lower text layer, set the top layer as a clipping mask, which is "live", so changes to the live text layer position or content will automatically update the clipping mask.
