P: How to export to SVG from Photoshop?

I have a PS file that has text that I converted to a shape, plus another shape. I want to convert that to an SVG file, but, when I use the Explort As dialog, the only export file options are GIF, PNG and JPG. If I do Save As, the only options are Photoshop, Large Document Format, Photoshop PDF, and TIFF.

I searched the help system, there's nothing there that I can find. Did they remove SVG export from Photoshop?? I sure hope not. I have Photoshop 22.4.3.

Hi everyone,

I understand how difficult it must be not to be able to export into an SVG format through Photoshop. However, I wanted to suggest trying Adobe Express as a possible solution for converting your images into the desired format: https://www.adobe.com/express/feature/image/convert/svg?cgen=JQVGW3QK&mv=other

I genuinely hope this helps in your work. Let us know your feedback.

Thanks,

Mohit

Hi all,

Export to SVG format functionality discontinued from Photoshop 22.5 version in August'2021 last year. This feature in Photoshop has always been experimental and discontinued due to low usage and limitations.

If you still want to export your Photoshop document as SVG, you can follow any of these workarounds here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/export-artboards-layers.html#discontinue-export-as-svg

For Apple M1 users: Open Photoshop using Rosetta and ensure Preferences > tec

I agree with you. For me it was uneeded move. I've learnt management folks often do things we can't understand. It's like to put a lock to the door and never use the keys 😛 But if users want it, inform them, you can find them under the doormat 😄

THE REAL CORRECT ANSWER

I see 3 posts that have been labeled as Correct Answers (not by me), but this is the only correct answer...

I solved the problem by buying Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo. They both export to SVG without having to jump through all the hoops Adobe is now forcing us to do for SVG export that Photoshop previously did well, and is now for some unkown reason removed and left in a "legacy" mode that is slow and klugey.

Thanks, Adobe. 🙄

You mean Export in previous versions was faster than the same but from Legacy?

No, I mean that the new Export As is much much faster than the old Save As Web legacy exporter tool that's needed for SVG, which is horribly slow.

Why is there no way to edit posts here? I meant to say that the new exporter is a lot faster than the old legacy one you're forced to use if you want SVG export capability.

Most possibly to edit own comments you need first to post 100 of them.

Legacy Export is not only Save As Web, but also new (fast) export, including SVG.

After you enable it in preferences you can still exportAs SVG format, check it - it's true 😉

That's the only thing that upsets me. The way they had it before worked well. The community is asking to "put it back".

I don't share your enthusiasm.  While I use Photoshop regularly for working with rasters, I found the experimental SVG export feature was a nice idea that was never fully realized.  I prefer that Photoshop focus on what it does best, not what it does it poorly.

llustrator as well as a bevy of other tools (free & paid) produce better SVGs than Photoshop.

See, that's just it. Photoshop did SVG export VERY well! In fact, I tried several other programs, and Photoshop always produced the smallest and most efficient SVG files from vectors and text. So I completely disagree with the assertion that Photoshop didn't do SVG export well.

Also, Photoshop has long had the ability to create vector graphics. People generally knew that if you make a PS file with only vector shapes, then it will export very cleanly to SVG. It's pretty clear that Adobe wants you to pay monthly for another piece of their subscription software just to do SVG exports. There's really little reason they had to remove SVG export from Photoshop. They called it "experimental" to make it seem like no one used it and that it was problematic, which is false.

Let's agree to disagree.  What's acceptable to one user may not work well for everyone.  If you've never opened SVG code in a text editor to add advanced features, you probably have no idea what I'm talking about.   What's the old saying, ignorance is bliss?   There's nothing blissful about working with Photoshop generated SVG code.  In fact, it's dowright painful.

By way of an actual example, here's a simple vector shape with border, fill and text. Beside it is all the code required (file size under 1KB):

image.png

Behold what Photoshop does (file size over 10 KB):

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" width="1364" height="462" viewBox="0 0 1364 462">

        fill: #0054a6;
        stroke: #f06eaa;
        stroke-width: 13.4px;
      }

      .cls-2 {
        fill: #eaed14;
        stroke: #ed720e;
        stroke-linejoin: round;
        stroke-width: 4px;
        fill-rule: evenodd;

It's utterly nauseating!

As far as low & no-cost alternatives, there are plenty of FREE SVG apps available that generate better code.  See my links above.  😍

Good luck!

It seems that your disdain for SVG export in Photoshop has more to do with a lack of experience or knowledge of vector vs. raster layers in Photoshop, which is why you've got a PNG image embedded in your SVG file. That's not Photoshop's fault, that's purely user error. But as you say: ignorance is bliss!

TomWho, I'd be careful to imply Nancy lacks expertise and experience! She can speak for herself, but I can assure you we all know perfectly well the difference between raster and vector. That's precisely what we've all tried to emphasize throughout the whole thread.

I suggest you post an example of how you would do it from Photoshop.

This is going around in circles. Photoshop is a raster editor. It has vector tools to produce masks and selections, to end up as raster output. Vector output from Photoshop is incidental and accidental, a side effect, not the main purpose. Why the insistence on using the wrong tool for the job?

Nancy OShea: "...you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. What's the old saying, ignorance is bliss?"

Perhaps Nancy needs to be careful about implying the same about others in this forum. Or is implying lack of exerptise and experience only reserved for Community Professionals?

Ok, let's leave that for now. The question remains, and this is what has puzzled me the whole time: Why the square peg in the round hole? Why use a raster application, instead of a proper vector application, if the goal is vector output? Wouldn't that make life a lot easier?

I realize it makes more sense to use an application for vector graphics to create a vector file. But Photoshop also has vector capabilities and created good SVG exports when you used only vector shapes and text layers. Not everyone needs or can afford Adobe's subscription for both Photoshop and Illustrator. Adding one more app doubles your monthly fee. I do web design and primarily use Photoshop, I don't really have a need for Illustrator.

If you are primarily creating SVG or vector graphics for websites, then it does make sense to lease Illustrator. But if you already have a tool that provides what you need, as Photoshop did for many, removing SVG export just seems like another money grab by Adobe. Based on the many replies to this thread, it's apparent Adobe removed a tool from Photoshop that many others found useful.

I solved the problem by buying Affinity Designer, because it's a low, one-time fee to get a very capable illustration app that can export SVG files. But now I have to use two different apps to do what I was able to do with one Adobe app. That doesn't improve my workflow or give me a better result, IMO. Lots of us were just fine with the SVG export from Photoshop, which, as I mentioned above, was actually pretty good when you used only vector shapes and text layers. In fact, I preferred the SVG export files from Photoshp than the ones I get from Affinity Designer. Photoshop's SVG output was actually leaner and cleaner.

My point exactly. That's the Affinity equivalent of Illustrator, their full-blood vector editor. Affinity Photo, their Photoshop, couldn't do it.

I second that request.  Your challenge @TomH07, should you decide to accept it, is to create a graphic similar to my example and show us your resulting SVG code exported from Photoshop. 😁

It is unbelievable how Adobe is messing up a working application. The new "save as" is unusable, the same with "export as". Adobe just removed the SVG export. What kind of progress is this?

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop on the M1 Mac while trying to Save/Export SVG files. This is a known issue & our product team is currently investigating it. For more info, please check: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-for-apple-silicon.html

Regards,

Nikunj

Adobe Photoshop does not support SVG files, illustrator,  Photoshop can export SVG file  however the file is likely to have more raster image data then vector image data.  You can Place ins SVG files as vector object.  The vector are in the object not in Photoshop. You can also import svg file as a single raster layer that may contain transparency.   Photoshop is a Pixel editor that some Vector tool. Phtoshop does not support Vector fille saving lie SVG.  The use of SVG with Photoshop is limited,   There is Product name  SVG Layers a Photoshop extension that can import most of what be in a svg file as photoshop shape layers.  Photoshop can not save SVG vector file, The SVG Layer Extension  has as has two other buttons beside the Import button.  Layers to SVG and a Doc to SVG.  I have never looked to these I do not install AI. I have no need for saving SVG files.

I did import a AI svg free sample an use doc to SVG.  the saved SVG was much later then the one I imported with SVGLayers

Hi JJMACK 🙂

Thanks for the information.

I've been a graphic designer for 22 years and a Photoshop user from day one. I develop everything that is later used as SVG file with Photoshop. I opened a PSD file today that still had SVG export preset. But when I click on Export, Photoshop immediately crashes. I have attached a screenshot.
