Hey everybody,

does anyone has experiences with "NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 Ti"?

Would you recommend working in Photoshop with this graphic card?

Thanks,

Hi

It should run fine with Photoshop, I have the lesser Nvidia GTX1050 TI and Photoshop runs without any issues, one thing to remember Photoshop doesn't work well with dual GPU's so if your system has another integrated GPU like an Intel or AMD it can cause issues

Yes, a lot of PC's have both an onboard GPU and a dedicated GPU, an onboard GPU is build onto the same die as the CPU whereas a dedicated GPU is connected to a PCI slot on the motherboard

Hi Lina,

We have not heard of any incompatibilities of the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 Ti running with Photoshop.

I'd recommend that you take a look at this article for more information: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cc-gpu-card-faq.html

Thanks.

Dual GPUs is not a problem on workstation PCs where you simply don't have a display connected to the motherboard outlet (which is fed from the integrated GPU). You'd have them hooked up to the video card outlets.

It does become a problem on laptops where both GPUs are active and connected, switched according to load or battery/power status. Then Photoshop doesn't know from one moment to the next which GPU to use. This isn't a passive one-way pipeline. A lot of active processing is done in the GPU, and data pass back and forth the whole time.

Hi Sergey,

I also have a Predator helios 300 with the same specs and same issue. But I also own another Acer laptop and it's the same. I'm not sure if it depends on the model.

I tried to set it to use only the nvidia card, but it wasn't working well so I switched back to the standard use of both.

In a few days I will upgrade mine with a new ssd and reinstall everything, if the new p.s. app will recognize only the intel GPU i will give it a try a day or two to see if it's better.

I'm not really sure if this depends on Acer products or the use of multiple gpus.

I think that for the display you need to use the integrated intel gpu. At least I couldn't set it to use the nvidia for the display, I recieved a message that my display is not connected to the nvidia card. And all this after I was setting it in bios also. So in that case in theory the only active gpu was the nvidia, but my screen wasn't working well with it. And the flickering didn't went away..

Maybe my message is comming a kind of late, but...

I have gtx 1660ti and I have a lot of troubles with the newer Photoshop versions of 22.x.x. Photoshop crashes very often when I try to use Select Subject, Masking, Neutral filters. I have contacted a lot of times the support of Adobe and the most of the times they didn't manage to find the problem. On the last contact today with the Adobe's support the guy from there found that the last versions of Photoshop can not utilize correct my GPU and he tolds me that responsible for that is Nvidia and they should update their drivers of 1660ti. I will contact now Nvidia, but I believe that they will tell me that the last versions of Photoshop needs to be updated to support better 1660ti.

It is funny how when you use one of todays best hardwares you have problems and crashes with Photoshop, but when I send those same psd files to my old laptop I do not have any crashes and everything is stable, just very slow.

It's a buggy driver. The rest of us don't have these problems.

Go to Nvidia and download the studio driver, not the game ready driver. When installing, check "clean install", and install only the basic driver. Deselect all the other components.

I will reinstall now even my Windows, because after the last Adobe's live support Photoshop is even worse: laggy and crashing much much more, causing even my system to show a black screen for a seconds.

I have two PCs here, one with a GTX1080  and the other with an RTX2080ti. Both work absolutely fine with Photoshop 22.2

However, I always use the Studio drivers from NVidia - never the game ready drivers. When updating I always used Advanced options and Clean Install - that way remnants of the old drivers are not carried forward. Finally - I never install the Gefore experience software which is there for games.

I also forgot to say - all these functions (select subject, select and mask, neural filters) use OpenCL code, which is a component in the video driver and runs in the GPU. So there's little doubt that the driver is the problem.

I did right now a clean installation of the Studio Video driver from Nvidia skipping Nvidia geforce experience and the crashes continues as before.

Hi !
I had the same problem, two graphics cards and Photoshop and other apps that couldn't use the highest performing graphics card (GPU).
It was a problem with the docking station that was connected to the laptop computer. By unplugging the docking station and connecting the laptop directly to the other screen, the "use a graphics processor" part was no longer grayed out and the applications did indeed use the 2nd graphics card.
Problem solved !

For Photographers… Only:

I have a GTX 1650 Dual OC (with my 11700K and 32GB 3600MHz RAM) which I bought for 2 reasons:

1. Beyond that GPU, you don't see much of a difference in Photoshop and Lightroom

2. For all tasks in Photoshop and Lightroom the CPU and then RAM is all that counts.

Now you have the 12700K (fast enough) which is killer fast for photo editing. Further, you need a fast M.2 NVMe SSD for your C Drive with a separate small (50GB tops) partition for your 'Scratch Disks’ but you do not need fast storage. I have a WD SN850 500GB with a 250GB partition for WIP. However it is almost no faster than working off a decent HDD! Faster for for copying / backup IS ALL. Saving PSD files uses the processor, the write speed of the drive makes almost no difference... Surprisingly! (Check Task Manager while working)

Bottom line, buy the fastest 8 — 10 core processor you can afford (Photoshop still uses only 8 cores) with 32GB of the fastest RAM you can afford. (2 x 16) Any decent Z690 motherboard will do. Buy a 500GB fast M.2 NVMe SSD for your 200GB C Drive, 50GB D Drive (Scratch disk only) and a 250GB E Drive (WIP and 2nd scratch disk which it will never use). After that, buy a modest GPU and HDDs. You'll be amazed at the performance. You DO NOT need an RTX 3070 for photo editing! (Video editing is an entirely different beast of course)

If you can afford it, sure, go for 3090s and M.2s but know they are nothing more than super-expensive luxuries. And my monitor is a BenQ SW2700PT (old model) I'd suggest an SW270C. I prefer 2K to 4K for more than one reason but mainly because 2K is more revealing and harsh. If it looks good on that, it'll look great anywhere!

Hope this helps someone …

Excellent insight Apusista.
Before reading this I had just ordered a new PC for photo editing Lightroom/Photoshop and all my research confirms what you say. I went for an I7 12700K CPU and fast DDR5 RAM (32gb) and a fast 1tb SSD card (7000/5000mb R/W).  I'm not convinced how much benifit I would see with a dedicated GPU so I left it out  (I'll see how that goes)
Good insight, thans you..

Note - with each release, more and more functionality is being moved toward the GPU. Apusista is correct in that you do not need a high end GPU designed for 3D graphic work in order to run Photoshop, and his emphasis on the importance of scratch disk space and speed is spot on.

However you may struggle to use some functions using an integrated rather than dedicated GPU. The system requirements here are still valid:

Thank Davescm,

I acknowlege that some functionality of photoshop, especially 3D,  depends on having a GPU installed. However, I'm coming from having an older i5 4th gen machine with no graphics card, using it for photo editing only and I don't ever remember being let down by the absence of a GPU. That said, if I do need a GPU in the future I can put one in (the thing then is for me not to get carried away and be tempted with some monster high end card). Hopefully my new machine will be future proofed for a few years to come, time will tell..
Billy..

Agree with Dave, this isn't so much about speed and performance as such. You won't see much payoff there. It's more a variety of advanced functions that just need to work, and work reliably. That's where an integrated GPU may fall short.

I just built a new i7 machine and put in an RTX 3060, solid midrange, nothing excessive. Most of the time it doesn't even bother to turn on the fans! It just sits there, sipping a daiquiri at a cool 48º C. This is in stark contrast to the old Quadro P2200, which would really break a sweat and spin its little fan furiously. The RTX is very obviously orders of magnitude faster. But does that translate to noticeably better performance in Photoshop? I'm still not sure, everything does feel instant and snappy, but I wasn't complaining before either.

But mostly, the RTX has proved rock solid. None of those small, but annoying glitches people report here all the time.

Future-proofing is something I feel can be mostly disregarded these days. With an average system turnover of 5-6 years, it doesn't make much sense to spend fortunes on the latest and greatest. Next year it's twice as fast for half the price anyway. On average, you get the most horsepower by spending less, but replacing more often. (OTOH, the craziness of throwing away fully functioning hardware just because it's "old" is another matter).
