Painting with mixer brush crashes PS very often (about every 5 minutes)

Using PS CC latest version I am trying to convert a photo into a paint, so I added a few layers copy from the background with Fill set to 1% and on top of the layer I am painting using a mixer brush. Sample All Layers is off. 

I am just painting over the layer and it crashes every few minutes. 

Any ideas?

Another one after just like 3 minutes. This time it did not crash but it just hanged. It stopped responding. As you can see there is still some free memeory and CP is ok

I have the same problem but only with certain projects.
