Pen pressure not working in the new Photoshop 2020 (21.0.2)

After installing the new Photoshop 2020 on my Wacom Companion 2, turns out the pen pressure is NOT WORKING at all. However the previous versions (20.0.6 and 19.1.6) still work perfectly with the pen pressure.

Has anyone run into that issue ?

I have the same proplem ... version 20.0.8 worked just fine.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that pen pressure is not working with the most recent release of Photoshop, have you tried reinstalling the tablet drivers to see if that helps?

Also, what operating system are you working on?

Regards,

Sahil

I keep my wacom drivers updated. I'm not sure reinstalling them will be helpful. (I'm worried that it might mess up with other photoshop versions)

I use the program on Windows 10 pro.

"Sorry" is not an answer, what do you do about it at Adobe ?

As a lot of people here, pen pressure doesn't work anymore on my machine.

21.2.1 on Win without PSUserConfig.txt (UseSystemStylus 0) should work.

In other words, remove UseSystemStylus 0 from your PSUserConfig.txt or remove that file entirely from your Prefs folder.

Also be sure Use Windows Ink is checked on the Calibration tab of Wacom Tablet Properties.

Remvoing the UseSystemStylus 0 makes no difference. Windows Ink causes all sorts of other issues with my pen tool, errant strokes, delays and stroke lag, clicks not working, having Windows Ink enabled is not a viable solution. Without Ink enabled PS definitely does not recognize the Wacom tablet's pressure sensitivity. Any other suggestions to get the pressure sensitivity back without Windows Ink enabled?

We've been making improvements in how PS works with Win Ink & Wacom.  I'd recommend trying it without UseSystemStylus 0 in the current release and definitely the next one that comes out very soon!

Brent, you're still seeing pressure sensitivity loss (full pressure) on Mac with 21.2.1?  If so, can you post a screen recording along with what OS version, wacom driver, doc size/res/bit-depth and if you are seeing this with a specific brush (which brush+settings) or all brushes?  Thanks!

EDIT

Removing that line/deleting the file got pen pressure back but was very sluggish and jittery. Reverted back to previous version.

Chad you seem to be glossing over the fact when Windows Ink is enabled, it introduces other issues which can be more troublesome than not having pressure sensitivy. Not sure why it has to be one or the other... Windows Ink doesn't offer the solution we need. Please push this up the chain, as the UseSystemStylus 0 solution gave us all what we wanted... pressure sensitivity without additional bugs, or lack of functionality, or need for other workarounds.

@norcalf0x I'm not trying to gloss over anything.  Please, tell me what bugs or issues are still deal breakers for using Win Ink.  We know about the OS toast for modifier keys and we're trying to work with MS to get an option to disable those, but what else specifically?  Tell me what's missing, using 21.2.2 and Win Ink enabled in Wacom settings.  The PSUserConfig workaround is old, from the Win7 days and MS has EOL'd Win7.

@chad_Rolfs  For one if I have to click on anything the pen doesn't want to click. I literally cannot get something like this:

Avanthera_0-1597802496442.png

To go away without using a mouse instead. Same issues when trying to open files, using the save dialog or trying to click-drag images into PS

@Chad_Rolfs Actually, with windows ink on I'm having trouble clicking on anything with my mouse inside of photoshop. I cannot click away a dialog, and I cannot close out photoshop, no buttons work. I must have hit enter last time I was testing it out.

That's with no PSUserConfig doc and ink on. All latest updates with drivers and such.

With PSUserConfig put in and ink off I'm able to use my mouse normally, but no pen pressure.

For me personally, popups such as system notifications like "not able to use brush because layer is hidden" as stated here already. Additionally, Windows Ink behaves differently giving particular brushes different effects, weights or texture variability, having to rework all your settings to fine tune something that was working a day ago. Other things include the pens behaviour with liquify and it often lags on a system that is well and truly above and beyond what is needed for the liquify. Sluggish overall behaviour on certain brushes as well, usually anything with a texture or dual brush setting, none of which had a problem prior to the patch. Just to name a few.

The pop ups are present as everyone else has stated. Other issues for me are a serious lag when moving the canvas around the screen. My cursor will move for a second then the canvas will suddenly snap to the cursor.

There is also brush lag but not as severe, and zooming feels the same as moving the canvas.

I also realised that in previous versions I have always had windows ink enabled (Huion) and the .txt file and it worked great, as it does with all the other apps which have pressure sensitivity.

right now the biggest main issues are :  ( while Pen pressure sensetivity is fixed with Winlink enabled )

Right & double click on Pro Pen 2 are not working correctly

-Right Click now is just zooming instead of window option of  ( Fit on Screen, 100%, 200%, Print size, etc..)

-Right Click with Alt is not bringing the option to increase/reduce brush size as it was ( and that option is really important for process)

in a few words Pro Pen 2 with windows link enabled is not assigned correctly.

i would apriciate if we could have a fix for this issue as i cant work and i have really urgent artwork deadlines.

thanks

I think I have solved the issue...

-Remove PSUserconfig text file...

-Activate Windows Ink on Wacom preferences...

-(You can choose to only activate windows ink on photoshop and deactivate it for all other apps)
Go to Windows settings > search Windows Ink > Uncheck Show visual effects > Check touch input when I'm using my pen

This fix removed the visual effects of windows ink, that annoying halo effect caused unstable pen pressure.

Hello everybody. Just to clarify :

We are used to turn of  Windows Ink systematicaly when using a Pen Tablet because it causes a lot of issues. (Wacom and other brands)

When windows Ink is ON :

1-There is a 1 second delay with every new clic and drag before the cursor catches up with the stylus. It happens when dragging a window, using a slider to adjust a value (in photoshop or any other app), resizing a layer, and even when drawing. So the begining of each new stroke will freeze for 1 sec before catching up to the movement of the stylus. You can imagine the hell it can be when hatching, or doing small repetitive movements.

2-Certain applications, like Chrome for exemple, don't respond to the stylus for certain things. You can't move the chrome window around at all when windows ink is enabled. You can't drag and drop email in your inbox from one tab to another ...etc.

3-Windows Pen & Stylus fonctionnalites are working against a fluid use of a Stylus. Especially the infamous "Press and hold" setting, that needs to be disabled systematically if you don't want this "mouse freezing blue circle of death" to appear each time you stop moving your hand for more than half of a second. (I suspect this functionnality to be responsible for the lag before each new stroke, even when you have it turned off)

4-Just while typing this post, I've discoverd a new issue. With Windows Ink enabled, it is impossible to select text by dragging over it with the stylus. I had to drop it and use my mouse each time I wanted to edit a sentence.

These are all the reasons (I can think of right now) why we have no choice but to disable Windows Ink, and use the WinTab alternative to get the pressure sensitivity back in Photoshop.

I'm assuming that everyone would love to use regular settings, and not to have to tamper with this kind of work around every time, but unfortunatly that is not possible.

I'm also having the issue of not being able to get pressure sensitivity back in Photoshop with the PSUserconfig.txt trick since the last update. And I hope you now understand why enabling Windows Ink is not a fix.

Again, using the PSUserConfig trick is not a choice, it is essential for a proper workflow.

I'm currently paying for the full Adobe suite, and not being able to work properly is a big issue right now.

Not knowing when this will be resolved is very worrisome.

PS: "Windows Ink" or "Pen and Touch" drivers on Windows, are currently pushing for touch and tablet functionnalities. These are cumbersome and unfit for any professional Stylus use.

Try this on Mac: Quit Photoshop. Go into System Preference > Security & Privacy > Accessibility.  If Photoshop is listed and checked, uncheck it. You'll need to unlock to make changes.  Also make sure Wacom drivers listed there ARE checked.  Relaunch Photoshop.  Do you still have the same issue?

This is not a very good solution. It's often repeated on different forums all over the internet, but the fact it the old WinTab driver is pretty bad. It gives higher latency (which sucks on display tablets where it's really noticeable, and Wacom already has pretty high latency), plus you get these "steps" in brush tracking and pressure resulting in pretty ugly lines. You can see this for yourself if you take the hard round brush and set the size to pressure. Then draw some curved sweeping lines with varying pressure. You'll see the curves aren't quite smooth but get sharp edges, and the same thing goes for the transitions in size - which will be most clearly visible at the end of the stroke with an ugly shoe lace appearance.

This didn't work for me. I use a Wacom Tablet and updated to recent drivers.

Version op Photoshop:

Adobe Photoshop Version: 21.1.2 20200410.r.136 2020/04/10: efaf3fa4e40 x64

I have the config file made in the correct directory but no help. It keeps giving me an error next to the brush setting\Shapedynamics\size controlled by pen pressure. In older version of photoshop (2018) I did managed to get it working. Unfortunately not in this version (I deleted the older versions)

Ok, so I was trying to work without the pen pressure for a bit because it is late. Suddenly I noticed that the pen pressure is working altough there was an error and the preview of the brush didn't let me see the correct brush outline. So I went over to a new document to try out some things and ... the pen pressure works!!! yay.. Now also on the document I was working on, pen pressure works. So why it didn't work in the first place don't know but tip:

Even if there is an error: try the brush on a new document. It should work

Oh yes: Windows Ink is Off 🙂 Thx!

Are you still having this issue? I keep getting an issue with the pen pressure. Driving me crazy. It will work for a few minutes, but when I click out of photoshop, then it will happen again....

Yup! Same issue. It's making working in Photoshop virtually impossible, as I frequently click in and out of Photoshop to my browser for image reference. I've been a lifelong Adobe user but if they don't put out a fix soon this might be the final straw for me to jump over to an iPad Pro and Procreate.

It happens for me. I found a momentary solution whenever it happens, just click your mouse once then undo the Dot that the click creates, pen should work normally.

Not a long term solution, hope it works for you

This is an issue with Build Up (the icon next to Flow in the options bar).  We are working on a fix for this issue but in the meantime, turning that off will stop putting in those spots.

2 Machines. Same issue on both. Both sorted now. Thanks so much, Weigajan!

I swear the reason Adobe fails to resolve so many of their bugs is because they're just waiting for people in the community like you to resolve these issues for them.

Much appreciated man!

I am having exactly the same issue on Mac OS 10.15.4

Particularly triggered by leaving Photoshop and then returning.

Photoshop then doesn't recognise my pen ressure and tilt.

I have to go into brush settings, which has the warning icon next to Size Jitter Control and reselect from the dropdown.

Only then Photoshop seems to kickin and recognise my Wacom Pen.

I am using latest driver for Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. This has only happened in 21.1 and later for me.

Please fix Adobe!

We (Photoshop team) are looking into the issue where initial pressure loss after leaving, then returning to Photoshop.

Hi Chad,

I'm also having the same problem, Im in photoshop version 21.1.2. on a mac.

The brush works well for awhile, then pen pressure cuts out. Then starts up again after a while. I'm going to follow this to see if there is a work aeound or an update.

Thank you,

Thanks Chad! Good to know. I've since found that switching to the eraser on the pen, as other users have advised works for now.

It's been a month since this post and nothing. This isn't a minor problem, it completely screws up the workflow of hundreds of your users, myself included. Also, the problem isn't isolated to when you leave Photoshop and come back. It also happens at completely random times in the middle of working. I'm using a Wacom Intuos Pro M on Mac OS Mojave. You gotta get this issue fixed.

I'm on Mac Catalina 10.15.4 and I have the same problem. Using a Wacom Pro tablet on the new MacPro "Cheesegrater" with current Wacom Driver. Getting good workaround results by switching tools...I hit (L) for the lasso tool, then jump back to the brush (B) and the warning icons in the brush pressure panel go away and pressure sensitivty is restored.

I've been having the same issue, I'll be drawing on my Wacom Cintiq 16, switch over to my internet browser from Photoshop, and when I return pen pressure sensitivity doesn't work. I've noticed that just clicking the current layer immediately fixes the issue until the next time I switch away. I hope someone can test this and see of it works as this seems a bit easier than the other solutions.

Cause of this issue (Pressure sensitivity loss on Mac): changing focus away from Photoshop and then back.

Workaround to avoid this or restore sensitivity without relaunch:  If you switch focus back to PS by using the stylus to paint, you'll experience this. Instead, switch focus back to PS via CMD+Tab.
Also, if you run into this, using the eraser end of the stylus will restore pressure sensitivity.

Bug fix for this should be out in the next update.
