Performance > Advanced Settings > Drawing Mode - Restricted to Basic in Photoshop 22.3 on Windows 10

This started with Alt Right Click brush size not working, and a look at Properties > Performance > GPU Acceleration > Drawing Mode showed it was set to Basic, and the other options were greyed out.  I thought that Alt right click brush size should still work with Drawing Mode set to Basic, and restarting the computer did get that working, but Drawing Mode was still restricted to Basic.

I upgraded the video card driver (RTX2070 — 465.91

I checked Windows 10 for updates and restarted the computer a couple of times.

This post on the Feedback site (December last year) shows a similar issue with V22.1 on a MBP but there are too many differences to consider it highly relevant.  The thing is I have not checked GPU Drawing Mode for a good wee while ass everything was working.

I've been keeping up with the forum for a few weeks now and have not noticed similar threads, and while I am not losing sleep over this, it does say:

...so does anyone have any thoughts?

System:
Windows 10 19042 up to date, clean reinstall a few weeks ago.

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop due to the Drawing mode being stuck at Basic. Have you tried re-installing the NVIDIA drivers or installing an older version of the drivers to check if you experience the same behavior? If not please try that to check if that helps.

You can also try the steps suggested here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

Please let us know how it goes!

Regards,

Nikunj

Nikunj - this is not a driver issue - it is due to a change in 22.3 and breaks the use of 30 bit displays. Dropping back to 22.2 restores normality.

Thanks for the info Dave! I will check about this issue with the product team & ask them to acknowledge it on the thread you've shared if it has already been logged as a bug.

It's a bug Trevor. I reported it on the feedback forum and several folk have confirmed. It also breaks 30 bit display.

I have reverted to 22.2

I will attach a link to the feedback forum thread when I get back into the office.

I can confirm Dave's analysis - the problem is specific to 22.3. I'm using a never Nvidia driver/gpu (461.92 / RTX3070) and observe the same behaviour with 22.3; 22.2 and 21.2.6 work as expected.

Yep, full functionality restored here too.

I do notice, however, that the "use native OS acceleration" checkbox, plus one more that I can't even remember, are now gone. They're probably not needed anymore.

Thanks Dave! All of the display issues were driving me nuts! We're four updates past 22.2 and it's still not fixed. I reverted back and everything works great.

@JBuchmann The issues described in this thread were fixed in 22.3.1.

A bit of background on GPUs:

1. Adobe are updating the core graphics functions in Photoshop. This is driven by the operating systems of Apple and Microsoft in which the old Open GL functions are being removed in the case of Apple, or deprecated in the case of Microsoft. This means that the graphics functions that have worked for years must be rewritten to use Metal and Direct X. At the same time, Adobe are sensibly updating those core functions to deliver the additional speed we require to handle the very large files of today.
2. Led by the changes being made above, Adobe introduced new GPU checks in 23.3.1. Unfortunately, these caused issues and have therefore been revised for v22.4. That means that many GPUs that incorrectly did not work in 22.3.1 will now be seen in 22.4 and will function.
3. Some functionality in Photoshop, such as 3D, still relies on the older Open GL graphics functions. To make these work, an additional preference Preferences>Technology previews>Deactivate Native Canvas has been added. This can be checked and Photoshop restarted to restore 3D functions to where they were in 22.3
4. Unfortunately, the move to update the core graphics functions will mean that some older GPUs will no longer be suitable. If you are using 22.4 and your GPU is still not recognised (and you only have a single GPU enabled with an up to date driver – conflicting GPUs remain an issue) then you could try and force Photoshop to use your older GPU by creating a file PSUserConfig.txt containing the lines:
# Force GPU On
GPUForce 1
Save that text file to :
Windows: [InstallationDrive]:\Users \ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Adobe\ [Photoshop_version]\[Photoshop_version]Settings\
macOS: //Users/[UserName]/Library/Preferences/[Photoshop_version]Settings/
Note though that this is requires 22.4 and is not officially supported by Adobe, so may cause other issues – so you do it at your own risk

Wow! Thanks for all of that! I did update to 22.4 and it still wasn't recognizing my graphics card. I'm not really sure how to tell if it falls into the 'older' category or not, but based on what you've said I guess it must be. I'm using a Surface Pro 6 which has Intel UHD Graphics 620 and LuminonCore IDDCX Adapter (drivers updated).

It's only a couple of years old and runs all Adobe programs like a champ, until now. It sounds like I may be stuck using the older version of PS until someday when I get a new system. I may try your workaround, but I'm not sure yet.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain all of that!

This is the feedback forum thread that I started :

So far, zero response from Adobe to it 😞

I have no idea why, but I am suddenable to set Drawing Mode > Advanced to Advanced.  All three options are now available.

[EDIT]  Well it worked for about two minutes but has reverted to Basic again.

Yes I see the same things. If you fiddle with the settings turn off GPU restart Photoshop you may be back on and set Advance mode and the restart Photoshop and it may or may bot still be set to Advance but eventually in will be set to basic.  You may also see in your Photoshop System Info the Photoshop had crashed on some date that Sniffer crash in Photoshop but it will run without issue from a command line and that Drawing mode is still Advance Mode but is allowed is false. Will sett if 22.3.1 changes anything.
