Just opened my computer, and suddenly my NEF files won't preview in Bridge or open in Photoshop. Old NEF files I've edited dozens of times, new ones I just loaded to the hard drive, anything and everything. This is ridiculous. My software is up to date and well beyond the needs stated.
These are from a Nikon D850, if that even matters.
I uninstalled everything, re-installed, and now the NEF files are previewing and opening (although Bridge is suddenly much slower than the previous version - I wonder what sort of features bogs down the thumbnail loading now).
In any event, crisis averted.... for now. -.-

I have a Nikon 3200, those NEF files are not having any problems in Photoshop 20.04, ACR 11.3.1 or Bridge 8.1 in MacOS 10.14.5
You say it just happened after power on or wake up of your computer? Have you restarted it?
Does Lightroom or any raw viewer recognize the Nefs? Does it display as thumbnails in your OS?
I've never heard of this, so I'm trying to figure where it might be coming from.

What happened was, I loaded bridge to check out a few shots I'd just taken. After a few minutes, it froze and then crashed. I reloaded it twice and it kept happening, which was odd. I then noticed that I actually had Bridge and the new 2019 Bridge, so I uninstalled the old one and loaded the new one, which did work fine, except that suddenly I couldn't view any NEF files. I even tried to load them into photoshop just as direct Open, and Photoshop tells me it can't open this file type. WTF???
