Recently, when I've tried opening photos in Photoshop, the photo doesn't appear.

So I've gone to check for an Update. Normally, after an update Photoshop works again.

This has been happen frequently, ever since this 2021 version.

This time, Photoshop won't open images and there are no Updates.

What is going on?

The latest version of Photoshop is 22.2.0.

What happens when you choose File > Open and navigate to (say) a JPG on your computer?

I have that version.

If I open a file, the screen remains grey.

If I zoom out all of the way it's still all grey.

If I press command-0 to fit to screen, I can see 0.5" of the image at the top of the screen, but can't scroll up or down, because there's nothing there.

If I keep zooming in, that 0.5" strip gets larger and larger.

Try resetting the Photoshop preferences, which you can do under the General tab in Photoshop preferences.

Alternatively, try unticking Use Graphic Processor under the Performance tab.

If none of that works maybe have the Graphic Card checked.
