Photoshop 22.2 - Preset Syncing memory leak - Please help

Hello,

We are several users (this thread and this one) both on MacOS and Windows to face a memory leak tied to the Preset Syncing option in v22.2 of Photoshop. In my case and probably other's, this is an infernal loop that I can't get out from (unless downgrading to v22.1.1, but it's not a long term solution), as you can see below :

1) Preset syncing activated in Preferences

--> PS always says it will close after preset syncing but the sync never ends and memory consumption increases to 100% until the computer crashes (force quit before it happens is preferable...).

2) Trying to uncheck Preset Syncing in Preferences

--> Yes/No/Cancel prompt appears and ask for keeping/not keeping the Presets on Creative Cloud. All choices (except Cancel, of course) lead to the same memory issue, without actually removes the Preset Syncing option.

3) Reset preferences

--> Preset Syncing is still checked --> back to 1)

4) Reinstalling Photoshop and/or CC

--> Preset Syncing is still checked --> back to 1)

5) Since this morning, after having tried some eventual fixes, the memory leak start when PS laucnhes (not only when exiting or unchecking Preset Syncing). Reinstalling PS and CC doesn't help. Thus, I can't use V22.2 at all now... Does that mean that some hidden files/parameters are still in some folder ? (I deleted Adobe Appdata files and parameters, as well as Adobe program files, after uninstalling PS/CC).

In this thread, it seems Claudia gave privately a solution to Peter-B. Please, can you help me as well in this thread ? And by the way all other users affected, by giving here some insight on what's going on and how can we eventually fix the issue ? If we can't, can you tell us if Adobe team is aware of the problem ?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Re-installing Photoshop does not reset User Photoshop Preferences you need to have Photoshop  do that or you delete your preferences.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed, reinstalling doesn't have any effect, but I also already tried to delete all Preferences (Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop [version]\Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings).

I have another laptop on where Syncing Preset is not active. I tried to copy its Preferences to my main computer but it seems irrelevant as well.

My main question after all of this is to find where the Preset Syncing option is actually managed so that I can focus on the right file/parameter in Windows. Maybe in the registry ? Or maybe it's tied to the Adobe Account ?  I also have tried since my first post to uninstall Photoshop & Preferences and then unlink the computer in the CC account management webpage (in case the option is managed at the account level). Then reinstalling PS. But same result, depsite having to signing in again into my Adobe account, the option is still checked and the memory leak proceeds.

I don't see any other choice than reinstalling Windows. That will be my next step, unless another thing should be tried before that.

It would be in you user ID application data for application  PS2021  in its preferences folder.

"C:\Users\(Your User Id)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2021\Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings"

If you rename when photoshop is NOT running

"C:\Users\(Your User Id)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2021\Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings"

to

"C:\Users\(Your User Id)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2021\Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings Old"

when you start Photoshop it will crate a new foldet and creat a set of default prefences for your user id

Thanks for your help. I deleted the 'Adobe Photoshop 2021 Settings' folder when PS wasn't running.

At launch, a new folder has been created, but the Presert Syncing option is still checked in Preferences.

After all those tries, I think somethings else has an impact on the Sync option. But I still haven't found what.

Sorry for the double post (didn't find an edit button), but just to be clear, all preferences has been reset except Preset Syncing one (i.e. Overscroll, GPU settings, etc.).

Hi again,

Tired of this issue, I simply reinstalled Windows. Now, the option is unchecked at last and no more memory leak.

However, I wonder if the following folder is not the initial issue.

Capture.PNG

I saw on other threads that memory leaks could occur with Adobe products when used in conjunction with One Drive or other devices such as Synology (I also possess a NAS). Before reinstalling Windows, One Drive (and this 'Photoshop Cloud Associates' that absolutely "wants" to be in One Drive folder) was on D: drive, but Adobe programs were on C:. Now, both are on C: drive. Maybe there was a conflict when PS was trying to sync, and if it uses of this "Associates" folder.

Only Adobe devs could answer that part I suppose. In the meantime, I would strongly advise not to use the Preset Syncing Option until it's more stable (if it will ever be). I would'nt think that my situation is the norm, but at the very least I'm not entirely alone to have faced this issue. If this affects both MacOS and Windows, it may be then a cloud conflict (CC vs iCloud, OneDrive, Synology, etc.).

Thanks for those who tried to help in the different threads.

I am so thankful for your posts, from your initial entry to this reply regarding One Drive potentially being a contributor to the problem. For months I've been having issues with One Drive and eventually tried to relocate it to my D Drive bc of the space consumption issues; of course, OD doesn't like being told what to do; so, it wasn't without pushback that I successfully moved "most" of One Drive but not all. SMH  Well, lo and behold, around the same time I began having issues with Photoshop - lagging, freezing, and most recently, running out of memory. As if the slowness wasn't enough, I either can't complete my edits or am not able save my edits without getting the error messages. Sometimes I can't even open more than one file at a time without it maxing out the memory! (I'm a photographer, btw.)  I NEED this program to work bc, like many others, it's how I run my business. I am not an IT specialist, but I have done so much research that I feel like I'm studying to become one. And, it's still a foreign language to me! I believe that I probably am like most people who's afraid to touch anything on the computer for fear of deleting the wrong files or just screwing something up. Don't get me wrong, I can follow instructions, but this is not like reading the directions on a box of cake mix. I don't mind saying that I have very little idea of what I am doing, and in order for me to feel confident/comfortable, I need to be clear on how one thing affects the other when troubleshooting; it can be very intimidating.😕 ...Now that I'm pretty much done ranting, I would GREATLY appreciate some help. I have a friend in IT who is willing to help me get rid of this wolf in sheep's clothing called One Drive and switch things over to Google Drive. HOPEFULLY, that will address a large part of the problem. I feel like even after that I may still have the RAM/memory leak issue, and the Preset Syncing you mentioned could be the culprit. I purchased this computer brand new last year (2020) after doing a bunch of research on the specs I needed to maintain Photoshop, so imagine my frustration to be told that what I have isn't enough.😖😫 Any interest in helping out a fellow Adobe victim?😏 Maybe walk me through the steps I should take? I know you literally spelled it out in your post(s), but maybe in a little more layman's terms if possible. ...Honestly, ANYONE who reads this post interested in chiming in to help, please do! Thanks in advance!💙
