Photoshop CC2020 freezes partially

Hello, here's hoping someone out there can help or has had similar problems.

Problem: After some time Photoshop (CC 2020) freezes, but only the 'canvas'/work area, I can still save, close out normally, change tools, etc, but I can't actually edit/zoom on the psd. Other times it won't pick up my tablet's input until I click on the canvas with my mouse, this only happens in PS, I've tested it out in Clip Studio Paint and haven't had any issues with it.

Needless to say this is really annoying and it hinders my workflow, I've never had this problem before the latest update which was somewhere in the last two weeks if I recall. I've seen a bunch of solutions floating around the internet and nothing worked for me.

I'm running on Windows 10 (fully up to date and freshly installed three days ago), I have a Wacom tablet.
Computer configuration: Intel Core i7 8700, 32 GB ram DDR4, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 as well as a 500 GB SSD and a 1T HDD (not sure if this is important or useful, for PS I use the SSD exclusively).

I'll try installing an older version  if nothing else works, though I'd rather not waste time doing that if possible.

Thank you

Was going to post the exact same issue. I get the error multiple times each work session, especially when I use the hand scrub tool quickly once I've refocused back to PS from another program.

I dont know if it's related or not, but I'm using a Wacom tablet as well (Intuos Pro). My video card is an RTX Super 2060, and my scratch disk is an M.2. This has been going on for weeks, hopefully we get an answer.

I seemd to have solved my problem of lockups by going to Photoshop Preferences > Performance > advanced settings > Drawing mode. I set them to basic and the lockups went away. I have since changed them up to normal and it still works fine with no lockups. No notisable performance changes.

I may next change up to advanced but I may leave well enough alone also

I do believe Adobe has a problem with these NVIDIA graphics cards since it only happens with P'shop 2020. All my other apps are fine at any gaphice settings.  Hopefully Adobe will step up to the plate and fix their problem

Gave this a try but no joy.

Hope they sort it soon, it happens for me at least once an hour!

Have you tried disabling flick panning as mentioned in this thread already?

Worked for me - havent had the issue since then and it has been working for months.

I have the same issue, but when I checked the settings it was already set to basic.  I do believe I have an NVIDIA graphics card.  this is getting frustrating.  I do think a lot of my issues do come from the NVIDIA conflicts.

Try turning the graphics card off in Pshop preferences and see if that helps

Same problem here.

The viewport stopped updating after I flipped an object horizontally. I have a GeForce GTX 1070. The issue keeps coming up ever since I updated to PS 2020. Luckily, I can still work with the 2019 version, where the problem doesn't occur.

Edit: When multiple documents are open, the other documents can still be edited as usual, so the issue seems to only affect one document at a time.

same thing here. both on my personal computer, which was build with digital painting and gaming in mind, as well as my work computer(s) that are build specifically for graphic design purposes(and are definitely not lacking).

it doesnt matter wether its a big or small file, if theres multiple files, or what i do, it can freeze shortly after opening the file, or several minutes or even hours into work: it just freezes at one point. closing the document works but its still annoying.

i've reinstalled ps, along with my drivers multiple times. other adobe programs work just fine, its only photoshop.

the freeze issue was resolved for me for a while after adding a 'PSUserConfig' file to my PS settings, but it came with other issues so i removed the file in the end. i use a Huion KAMVAS-GT 221 Pro as my drawing tablet at home, on my work pc theres no drawing tablet used, all other drivers are updated.

i have this issue since upgrading to PS2020 a few months ago(at home), for work i only have had this issue for like the recent 1-2 months(?), but due to work i can neither switch to another older version or program.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried clicking on the 'legacy compositing' checkbox, restarting/updating my cintiq and creative cloud, deleting things to make more space on my mac, and yet a couple times per session my photoshop will freeze and will force me to quit. I feel like i've tried everything,  and yet it keeps freezing and i'm losing work. I save to my icloud, and these documents are small.

Hey cam-kletke,

if you are indeed having the same issue we are having, you should be able to save by simply going to File > Save. As a matter of fact, I think the issue at hand simply prevents the viewport from updating. So at least, whenever the issue comes up, you should still be able to save the file, close Photoshop and then restart and reopen the file.

This needs more traction so thank you for posting this! I've had this exact problem, but it's getting progressively worse. I have to constantly save, close the canvas and reopen it multiple times while working.
Literally was fine last update but it's super annoying.

Having the same exact issue.

Ich went back a few PS Versions where the issue appears less often or slightly different. (Below v.21 works for me... more or less)

The lower versions have a similar problem where they do not update the changes you´ve made correctly or too slow.

Usually alt tabbing back out and going back in instantly updates everything but that really does hurt my workflow.

Its not completely reproducable for me ( @V.21+), but what i can say for sure is, that it appears while holding the spacebar and leftclicking to get to another part of the canvas. (at least for me) - then suddenly the cursor changes to the windows cursor and you cannot change anything within the artboard.

Its possible to save (without corrupting anything), click the menus up top, close the program ect. but its not possible to change anything on the artboard or swap to another tool.

It feels also like its happening more often, the bigger the pixelsize is.

Switching between brushes, doing some lines, kiting around the artboard (being slightly zoomed in) usually makes it happen on my machine.

Funny enough it just happened again after opening the system info to copy the text above 😄 - didnt even need to push spacebar. So im not too certain if my informations on how this is happening are valuable at all.

I've had this same issue for just over a year now. Adobe staff member(s) weren't very helpful, either. One of them suggested I was having driver issues.

Please try to disable flick panning (preferences/tools) - ive been working for hours now without a single freeze.

Even if this is not the solution, this might ease your pain, working longer without that many interruptions.

Flick panning just gives your camera a little momentum instead of stopping abruptly (after swiping to a different location on the artboard being zoomed in) - i usually liked this feature since it feels very smooth but at this point im willing to give up anything for a small improvement regarding this freezing issue.

all the best.

I hope they will fix it, this bug is really annoying and still happens in the current version.

Thank you for the workaround recommendations, I will try those - especially disabling the flick panning. Because the bug occured for me several times exactly when I "scrolled" my workfile while it was zoomed in.

Its a known issue with the latest Photoshop release:

From Adobe:

Adobe is aware of an issue where Photoshop 22.3.1 is not properly detecting the GPU, and have a fix that will be available soon; thank you for your patience.

An earlier version of Photoshop may be installed and used for the time being.

The issue doesn't seem to be because of PS not properly detecting the GPU, as I have the same issue as everyone else, except my PS detects my GPU just fine.
