I am a painter, and I only use Photoshop in the most rudimentary ways.  When I tried to open Photoshop this morning (I use CS5, MacBook Pro with OS Catalina), a window came up tell me I needed to update my CS5.   When I click on the prompt to do so nothing happens.  When I ask the question in the search bar in Google, I am directed to the Adobe Creative Cloud site.

Do I really need to pay for a monthly subscription?

CS5 is not compatible with current versions of OS X and hasn't been for a while. Apple simply doesn't support the necessary system libraries and in reverse the program can't deal with changes in e.g. security stuff and user permissions. There may be some obscure ways to hack around this, but at the end of the day the program may still only be barely usable. If you really only use this stuff so rarely and don't want to spend money on a subscription, then look into alternatives. Affinity Photo is just 60 bucks and GIMP is totally free... They are both similar enough to PS, both technically and in terms of handling at this point and would even be more advanced in some areas than CS5 was.

Creative Suite is no longer sold or supported.   Either revert to an older OS to support legacy Creative Suite 5 and never upgrade your computer again.  Or get modern 64-bit software that is compatible with Catalina.  Your choice.
