Not sure what changed but all of the sudden whenever I use the text tool my whole program locks up and is consuming 970 mb of memory. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well disabling fonts to no avail.

How many fonts do you have loaded/active?

Try resetting the Type tool or All Tools (options bar). It might be one errant typeface that is causing the issue.
