Another annoying problem in Photoshop:
First of all: I work on the Mac with High Sierra, current version of Photoshop.
Situation: Background layer empty and filled with white.
Layer 1 contains an object
When I move this object, I see it twice.
If I click layer 1 invisible, I still see it, because it seems to be on the background layer. But actually it is not there.
If I make the background layer invisible and visible again, the object has disappeared and is (as it should be) only on layer 1.
If I move it there again, the whole circus starts again. The object is visible twice again.
With the latest updates Adobe has once again delivered an amazing example of incompetence. Thanks for that Adobe! I avoid describing other problems in Photoshop and InDesign at this point. It steals my time that Adobe doesn't pay me. And I wonder why I should still pay for Adobe applications.
Does turning off Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Legacy Compositing and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

You're my hero! That's the way to fix the problem for now. Thanks for that.
But that means that I have to switch every time I switch between newer and older files and there are display problems with the layers. And there are plenty of older files that have to be changed from time to time.

This is a user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by.
And feel free to add your vote to the Bug Report on the Layer-duplicate-display-issue:
