Rotating part of an image

How do I rotate part of an image? I did a technique last year where I rotated part of an image by using 'paste special' for an image into a thick square outline and when rotated the section of the image slid along the shape of the square instead of rotating as a square like when using control and T but I can't remember how I did it.

Sorry I haven't explained it that well, I don't know how else to describe it.

Did you you use clipping Mask?

Thank you but I realised I just needed to "paste special" > "paste into" the shape. Thank you anyway.
