Suddenly neither PS 22.4.1 nor the older 21.2.8 version would save files, regardless of file size, layer numbers, or document format. It quickly reaches 99%, but never completes the saving process. I've been able to work with PS properly so far, nothing has been changed in my setup and then it stopped working for no apparent reason.

I've updated both versions, restarted several times, but nothing. Then I updated Catalina 10.15.7 to Big Sur and I still cannot save files. PS has access to my HD, I'm not saving to an external drive or to a network.

You might want to try running Disk First Aid to check the drive.

Another free utility to look into and run is Onyx.
